What a ship - what a crew! Some of the fondest memories of my 33.5 years
of active duty are from the 35 months I served in Newport News. Served
with some great people and am extremely proud of the people who supported
me in the Captain's Office, Post Office, Legal Office and Print Shop. I
hope you share my pride. |

Remember all the fun, liberty in a lot of wonderful places and, oh yes, the work and time at sea. I was sorry to hear about the accident and
the loss of so many of our crew. It was a beautiful ship to see so
much of the world. I am proud to have served on her. |

Shipmates It's with heavy heart I need to tell you of
the death of our friend and shipmate Larry Slone. He died
Sunday night 8/15/04 of a massive heart attack. Larry was on board
from 1969 till Oct 1972. He was in 7th Div and then the print shop.
He left the ship after the explosion, with a knee injury. Larry and
his wife Anita were at the last two reunions. Larry was 56 years
old. Larry was a great man and my best friend and will be greatly
missed.

I reported aboard in July 1969 and was assigned to the 7th Division. I
ended up in the " First Lieutenant's" office working for LT John
Lambert, MCBM Jenning's and Chief Warrant Officer "Bosin"
Schmidt. When I reported aboard, the ship had just come back from a
"Nam Cruise". I remember the ship went into drydock for some
work, after which we made a "North Atlantic Cruise". I have
never regretted for a moment serving onboard; it gave me the opportunity
to see some of the world and to make friends I can still picture in my
mind! I've often wondered where they are and what has become of them. I
remember the night I heard on the evening news that one of the eight inch
turrets had blown up and that some of crew had been killed. Thinking about
it still bothers me to this day. I was transferred off the Newport News in
02/70 and served the remainder of my enlistment with the 21st NCR (SeaBees).
When I got off active duty I stayed in the "reserves" for 25
years, retiring in 1993 as a YNC. |

who was in EX division with me. I remember a tow-headed 2nd class in EX
from Kansas or Iowa, can't remember his name but he was a good squared
away sailor. I can't recall the EX Chiefs name but he had relatives in
the restaurant business in Memphis. |
