Remember all the fun, liberty in a lot of wonderful places and, oh yes, the work and time at sea. I was sorry to hear about the accident and
the loss of so many of our crew. It was a beautiful ship to see so
much of the world. I am proud to have served on her. |

Shipmates It's with heavy heart I need to tell you of
the death of our friend and shipmate Larry Slone. He died
Sunday night 8/15/04 of a massive heart attack. Larry was on board
from 1969 till Oct 1972. He was in 7th Div and then the print shop.
He left the ship after the explosion, with a knee injury. Larry and
his wife Anita were at the last two reunions. Larry was 56 years
old. Larry was a great man and my best friend and will be greatly
missed.

I reported aboard in July 1969 and was assigned to the 7th Division. I
ended up in the " First Lieutenant's" office working for LT John
Lambert, MCBM Jenning's and Chief Warrant Officer "Bosin"
Schmidt. When I reported aboard, the ship had just come back from a
"Nam Cruise". I remember the ship went into drydock for some
work, after which we made a "North Atlantic Cruise". I have
never regretted for a moment serving onboard; it gave me the opportunity
to see some of the world and to make friends I can still picture in my
mind! I've often wondered where they are and what has become of them. I
remember the night I heard on the evening news that one of the eight inch
turrets had blown up and that some of crew had been killed. Thinking about
it still bothers me to this day. I was transferred off the Newport News in
02/70 and served the remainder of my enlistment with the 21st NCR (SeaBees).
When I got off active duty I stayed in the "reserves" for 25
years, retiring in 1993 as a YNC. |

who was in EX division with me. I remember a tow-headed 2nd class in EX
from Kansas or Iowa, can't remember his name but he was a good squared

the restaurant business in Memphis. |

I reported on board as a PFC and got promoted to Corporal before leaving

(Capt. Bond's orderly). Did not like the Brig Watch of our prisoners we
had in our cells.
Really think often of all the crew and the diversity of peoples we have
shared activities with. Whether they have been on board the ship as crew
mates or people we have interacted abroad. Hoorah.!!! |

I had a heart attack in 1980, six weeks in the coma, then on to the "vamc"
for 3 or so years. All is well now and its about time I played more of a
part because I need to and want to! My memory has stayed intact for the
most part but there are some names that I still cant remember but all
things in good time! The only other thing that may be important is the
fact that I legally changed my last name in 1971 to Zemnes from Zmijewski. |

I came aboard on a cold day in late October or early November of 1969.
A few days later I came aboard one morning to find the Forward Radar Room
had several inches of water on the deck. That was the start of my
career on the Newport News and it was downhill from there. I see a
few names on the crew list that I recognize. I would be glad to hear
from any of my old shipmates. God Bless you all. |

Reported aboard in November 1969 and assigned to the Communications Department as the CR
division officer. Was promoted to LTJG and LT while aboard. Detached in January 1973.
Qualified as a CDO, Fleet OOD, EOOW, and CICWO while aboard. Also won the Atlantic Fleet
ship handling competition in 1972. Made a Northern European/NATO cruise in 1971 when I was OI
division officer. Was the OOD at 0100 on October 1, 1972 when number two turret exploded. I
was the Operations Department Administrative Assistant at the time. A night I'll remember
forever. Ship returned to Norfolk from deployment just prior to Christmas. Detached in
January to go to Destroyer School. I love the NEWPORT NEWS and got tremendous satisfaction
serving aboard her. Retired as a CDR in 1992. |

The Newport News was a great ship and I'm sad to hear that she was scraped. I'm surprised she
wasn't refitted and kept in service! I was happy to find the web page for the Newport News.
It brought back a lot of memories and helped me make contact with a few shipmates I lost track
of. Anyone out there who remembers me please get in touch, it would be great to hear from you.
As for what I'm doing these days, I'm currently the photographer for the Blanton Museum of Art,University of Texas, Austin. |

I was highlined off the Newport News 06/11/72 to an oiler while refueling
off the coast of Veitnam. I was one of the crew that was heading back to
the States for separation from service.
My heart stopped when I had learned a few weeks later that a barrel had
exploded on turret #2 and there were casualties. I have thought about the
incident many times over the years.
On a good note I'll always remember New Orleans, the NATO cruise, the
wonderful weather returning to Norfolk after Operation Snowy Beach!! and
the guys of E divsion.
Since leaving the Navy, I returned to Long Island, New York and worked 22
years for Grumman Aerospace Corp. on the E2C Hawkeye program, then became
a Licensed Practical Nurse where I worked at a local hospital for ten
years. Have since retired and now living in Fallsington, Pa.. |
