This way, people who served together will be listed together. Just find someone you want to visit with, click on their Email Address and start typing. We hope you all use this to page to visit with your old (and new) shipmates.
To email a shipmate copy and paste the address then remove the space after the @. This is done to cut down on Spam email.

I joined the Newport News at the end of 1958 and worked as a Look Out and Driver with the OL gang. I’m not sure when I started working with the Radio people in the Communications Office. It was a very small office and it seemed like I spent most of my time with an officer and a clip board writing up reports on all the inspection we had.

The "News" was one of the most handsome gun ships in the fleet. She had a graceful, sweeping bow as well as well thought-out gun placements, providing a imposing yet sleek look. During my time aboard, the Skipper maintained high crew moral and kept us at a high degree of readiness. The ship rarely had a spot of rust or blemish anywhere, either on or below deck. The wood main deck was always smartly maintained and routinely holystoned. While I often visited other ships and messed with their crews, the "stew burners" on the Newport News routinely served the finest chow afloat. I often went forward to play cards with the Stewards Mates in Officer's Country. Boy, those were some swell, late night  mid-rats. Thanks guys for taking in this lonely sailor from aft and feeding me when I was hungry. I have seen the Newport News several times in Philadelphia alongside her sisters Des Moines and Salem. As of August, 2001, I am not aware of her whereabouts. Large gun ships such as the "News" are no longer viable in today's Navy. As such, ships of this type will remain a part of the US Navy's proud, historic past. Well done USS Newport News...and a sincere hand salute to all those who have served aboard CA 148.

I served aboard the Newport News in 1958-1959 . It was in Spain where I received my eye injury, which sent me to Germany, Bethesda Maryland, Bremerton Washington, and finally to Treasure Island where I was medically discharged I'm now married, have 4 children and 9 grand-children.  I had a print shop in Seattle Washington for years and sold it in 1987 and moved to Anacortes Washinton where I built our home and am now retired but still do some remodeling.  I've recently bought and restored an old Rossen gill-netter which takes up a whole lot of my time...  I'd really love to meet up with any of my old ship mates and see the old Newport News again.  If you have information please write.  So looking forward to a response

Enlisted @NYC 1955. Boot Camp Bainbridge NTC them
Radio Class "A" School @ Bainbridge. First sea dutyUSS Iowa BB-61. Put her in mothballs 1957. Then assigned USS Des Moines CA-134. Got "swap" off Daisy Mae in 1958 during Med tour - onto USS Salem CA-139 (Via Hi-Line off Malta Coast) and came back with Salem during summer 1958 for her de-activation. Late August, many weeks into de-activation process at Portsmouth (Va.) yards, we received a "Flash" message stating "cease de-activation -make ready for sea." - we were back at sea within about one week and heading "out"........ which turned out to be Beirut Lebanon at the time of the (first?) coup d'etat there, and which, I believe, was the first "rumblings" of what finally took place on 11th. September. This last cruise on Salem, incidentally, afforded me the right and privilege of becoming a member of VFW Post 9617 here in Stamford. However, back to the USN - finally, with the deactivation of Salem, I was sent to shore duty at Little Creek as a "short Timer" - but being a sea going sailor, I took this for about a month.....put in for a "swap" and was most fortunate to get the USS Newport News CA-148. I must say that duty on her was great....I only wish it had been longer. But finally November ('59) came around and it was time for my separation (weren't we ALL eager for this?) and thus ended my naval service. It wasn't until many years later that, as an (almost) old man, I have come to appreciate what an important part of my life this was.  BT AR

I just found out about this website from an old shipmate, John H. Simitz, who was our ships photographers mate when I was on board thunder. I was a speed=key CW operator on board, and maintained the transmitters too, plus cryptographer.  We crossed the Atlantic six times on three cruises and I enjoyed the North Atlantic cruise the best.  I still have my blue nose certificate too and boy was it cold there.  Does anyone remember Boreaus Rex, ruler of the North Wind.  I remember the Cuban missle crisis and turning back that russian frieghter, the Labinsk, or however it was spelled.  I do remember the hugh missles tied on her top deck and I am glad we averted a catastrophic situation.  Being a ham(amateur radio operator) , ouir supply officer, Lt. Commander Avellone, helped us purchase a Collins Amateur radio transmitter and receiver.  We made a lot of phone patches for our shipmates to their families, wives, and sweethearts.  A shipmate of ours, Louis V. Olsen, who recently pas!sed away will be missed.  We called him speedy gonzales because he copuld walk faster than most people can run.  I am looking forwards to the next reunion and will bring my lady friend lillie with me.  Best regards, Robert E. (Bob) Jones,RM2,x-W3GQQ, but now N4BJ and I am president of the Kingsport Amateur Radio and Bays Mountain Radio Club, here in Kingsport, Tennessee.
