I was sure surprised and especially glad to find that We (USS NEWPORT
NEWS) now has a web page. Thanks to all involved in the creation and
upkeep of it. I haven't took the time to really enjoy all of it yet
but plan on doing so in the near future but did see several familiar names
that I plan on contacting soon!!! I was in CR division, which is the
communications sector of the ship, I was ships company for the most but
also in there somewhere was TAD to comsecondfleet. I hope that in
all the shuffle that I wasn't lost in the transitions as this is my 2nd
try to get my name and address on the Members Page. Lt. Commander
Alvarodo was our Division Officer at the time, one good Man as I'm sure
everyone agrees. If I do get on the page with this 2nd attempt
"HELLO TO ALL" and Looking forward to visiting with everyone
that I can!! How bout that NATO Cruise (1971)?? See Ya Later and

This is fantastic. I always wondered what happened to some of my old
friends from the Newport News. Now, I might have a chance to find out.
Anyone remember the Nato Cruise in 71. It was called "Royal
Knight" It started in September and went to October 1971. We visited
London, England; Rosyth, Scotland; Copenhagen, Denmark; Helsinki, Finland;
Hamburg, Germany and a few other countries. I also remember my first Mardi
Gras And of course making the trip to Nam

I found this web-site today by accident, and am glad I did. I think
of my shipmates often, and would love to hear from all of them. I
left Thunder to go to C school on the Mk 68 GFCS at Great Lakes, was
stationed on the USS Brewton a DE out of Hawaii for 2 years, where my wife
Carol and I were divorced, then went on to Great Lakes as an instructor
for a couple years at GFCS 68 C school. I left the USN in May of
1977 after 8 1/2 years. Went on to repair fax and laser printers for
22 years, and am now a Licensed Tax Consultant and Financial Analyst.

communications divisions. Just was looking up the history of the Newport
News and was sorry to see it was scraped out. It was too bad it wasn't
left in the moth ball fleet. I only served on board for less then a year.
I have good memories of when we went to Cuba for training after getting
out of the yards. I came on board from the USS Wright after it was
decommissioned in 1970. |

looked up this site this evening while thinking, yet again, of my
brother John who served ever briefly on your ship USS Newport News. The
ship was being prepared for its voyage to Vietnam in October, 1970 when
he collapsed on board doing galley work. A huge tumor that had been
undetected during induction into the service had put pressure on his
internal organs. Never expecting to even make it to the Naval hospital
that evening, he passed away on December 21 of that year.

Served on NN 1970-71. A case of hepatitus on my honeymoon landed me in
Bethesda Naval Hospital, after release and convalescent leave I was
reassigned, and missed deployment to Westpac. I found out much later about
the tragedy of 1/01/72, the valor of the survivors, and the 20 who were
lost. With such a remarkable history as that of NN, it seems to me that
she deserved a better ending than a scrap yard in Louisiana. Brian Ducote
if you're out there somewhere, I'd like to hear from you. I'll always
remember the wild times in DC. Mike O'rear gave me the tour on my first
day aboard, and his friend Quentin fuller taught me the art of smoking a
pipe. Tobacco...the other, I learned on my own. I will always remember
those days even though now at 54 it's hard to believe any of us were ever
that young. My best to all, and my prayers for the ones no longer with us. |

I was really glad to happen on the Thunder webpage..I recognized some of
my old shipmates here too...And Burdy, it was Tony Henson from
Baltimore..he became a postoffice employee but we kind of lost track of
each other over the years. And I was sorry to hear about "Swanny"
you'll have to fill me in. I guess Strott is a lifeguard in Ocean City
still! And I see Mike Elefant signed in, It seemed like I was always on
his watch crew, which was the best of course to me. I'd really like to
hear from some of the guys if you would like to write and fill me in on my
old shipmates. I did manage to see Old Thunder in drydock in Maryland
after I got off and remember seeing Harley Brownstead on board. I remember

First, I would like to commend those who put this site together. Going thru the pages of this
site gave me goosebumps, made me smile and also made me sad. So many names of guys from the CR
gang who served while I was there who have signed up on this site ... some I remember, many I
can't quite put the name to a face even though the names sound so familiar. Some thoughts and
memories: To "Swanny" ... a funny and gentle hulk of a guy stricken by cancer and taken so
young...I still think about you, the way you'd sneak up on guys, give that snort and do that
thing with your fingers. To Ray Kopp and Richard "Coco" Galasso (we lived to see the Rangers
win the Cup!!!) ... so many good times, we were inseparable. I never would've made it without
you guys. Gibby, I saw your signup. Wayne Youngman ... didn't we also call you Youngblood Hawk?
... Frank Sorba... an officer and a Gentleman way before Richard Gere ... To Mike
Willaims, saw
your comments and it's Larry (not Dick) Crookshanks! ,although if you remember the way he showed off his endowment it's easy to understand why you
thought that was his first name. "Gogo" Gogue, remember burning up those "phone" lines from
the Chief's office? Another guy I remember is Ivan (from ECCM) a brilliant guy from Montana,
holed up in that tiny room all the way up there in the amongst the radar equipment ... sorry
about that weird phone call almost 20 years ago, thanks for being there. And finally, Dick (I
think that was his first name) Henson from Baltimore ... the NY teams kicked Baltimore's butt
in 1969/1970 and they will do it again in the Super Bowl this year ... I always wanted to throw
that up to you, but now I'm far enough away that you can't punch me out. Thanks for the
memories, and thanks for the site. She might have been decommissioned, but "Thunder" will
never be silenced. |

Wow, what memories. thanks to the web site manager for giving us a place to reflect. I have
the cruise books for 71,72&73 if anyone needs anything from them. Thanks to my buddy James
Dotson (OI Division) for showing me this site. My study is decorated with a framed 14x16 picture
of "thunder" along with the "Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club" mementoes. I thought I was the only one
that had a copy of the PT boat tape (I'm glad someone placed it on the web page for all those
that never heard it.) I'm sorry I opened the page of "thunder" being scrapped; that was
painful. She was beautiful!!!!!! The best the Navy had. |

I really don't know why I did not come to the net sooner I have run into
several members of the ship. I'm quite sure everyone remembers BT2 William
Johnson, who spent a lot of time playing our favorite tune (during our
Vietnam trip) in our onboard radio station. I ran into Him after his
retirement in Waukegan Il. (right near GL) He was spinning records at the
Elks lodge. I made E6 before I left the NN, I worked for MR1 Fair. During
my early days on the News I spent a lot of days taking readings and
sounding in the engine room. In fact I was the E3 that was instructed to
remove a valve (while at pier 7) which flooded I believe it was #1 engine
room. I still will never forget that night in Vietnam. I especially
remember my good
friend who played on the basketball team with BM2 Clark ( He had a
jump shot that hardly ever missed) His wife was pregnant
or had just given birth. I'm glad to see there are those who
remember. I never really thought about the danger while in
'Nam, even when I heard the shrapnel bouncing off the engine
room walls. I realized later in life that I perhaps did suffer some
PTSD, which may have attributed to a little trouble I got into at the
later part of my career, I often wonder why there was no consulting. I
thank God that I am here today and I know it is only by GOD'S grace. The
families of those who lost their lives
are always in my prayers as well as you who served onboard the Gray Ghost
from the East Coast. I often tell people I served
onboard the Ship that ended the Vietnam War. ** We deserved so much and we
lost so much. May GOD bless you all** |

Andy was a Federal Protective Officer (FPO) with the base police in
Norfolk, VA after his discharge from the Navy. He then
relocated with his family back home to Detroit, MI. He continued as
an FPO with the local VA Hospital and eventually at Selfridge Air National
Guard Base. Andy died in a trucking accident in Minnesota in May 1989. The truck driving position was the long distance
variety. His death was very unexpected. He is survived by his
wife and three daughters.

looked up this site this evening while thinking, yet again, of my
brother John who served ever briefly on your ship USS Newport News. The
ship was being prepared for its voyage to Vietnam in October, 1970 when
he collapsed on board doing galley work. A huge tumor that had been
undetected during induction into the service had put pressure on his
internal organs. Never expecting to even make it to the Naval hospital
that evening, he passed away on December 21 of that year.
