I spent all my sea time on the CA-148 in First Division. After the Navy,(8/62-9/65 "Kiddie Cruiser") I was an apprentice at the PNSY. I decided to work on oil tankers in late 1970. Then, working my way up, I sailed worldwide as 3rd, and 2nd mate on numerous deep sea merchant tank and freight ships such as, VLCC's, RO-RO's, T-2's. Went ashore to work at the Naval Warfare Center in Philadelphia. For many years I actually drove past the 148 as it lay with the mothball fleet at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard (PNSY). The day it was towed away, I watched from another pier as the 148 was slowly pushed and pulled out of the back channel lay up basin on it's last trip down the Delaware River. Destination: The Breakers.

This was a great ship. I was fresh out of Boot Camp and filled with awe when I came aboard. Captain DuBoise welcomed me aboard in front of the ships company. I remember the NYC cruise, my home town. My family came aboard, I was so proud. I went on to become an EM/2, aboard the USS Randolph CVS-15. But will never forget the Newport News. Hi "OBIE" I remeber you.

The Newport was without a doubt the "finest Ship" in the Navy. I spent 28 years in the USN and when asked me what ships I served on, I proudly boast the Newport News. I was a "cruiser sailor", "wooden decks and iron men". I remember after we went to the Dominican Republic we went directly to Boston for a Veteran's Day celebration. VADM Sanderson threw out the first ball at Fenway Park that night. I took photgraphs of the occasion and afterwards took a seat in the dugout. I thought it was a great place to watch the game. Then the manager came along and said I had to be in uniform to be there. I am in uniform, he smiled and threw me out any way but to a box seat just behind the dugout. It was great to be part of the Newport News. I still have the ships plaque I purloined from JO1 Frank Castellucci prior to going to Recruiting Duty in Detroit, Mi. The thought still makes me smile. I remember shooting photos of a Good Conduct Award ceremony. The Captain proudly announced SM1 Joe Crockett, First Award. He looked at Joe incredoiusly as Joe have five or six red hashmarks. Joe remarked, "It took me a little while to settle down Captain." God, those were great times.

The News was my first ship. I recall boarding her just before going to Newport, RI. At that time all non rated engineering personnel were required to serve in the engine room of which I was assigned to M Division engine room 2. I hated being below the waterline so I volunteered for mess duty worked on my seaman rate and eventually was transferred to 5th division which I loved. I started as striker on the Mount 56 made my first chevron and was assigned to Mount 54, the one with all the gold E's. 5th division was hand picked by our division officer to be the biggest badest guys to represent the ship in volunteer sporting events with other commands. I recall getting our butts kicked by the Marines at Gitmo during out shake down cruise coming out of the yards. I also recall a North Atlantic cruise where we went into the Artic Circle and woke up with /as a official "Blue Nose" The News was great duty  and the last of the old glory Navy. I display her picture with guns blazing proudly on my office wall. It never fails to create interesting conversation. I would like to find a couple of old buddies Wayne Saxon, Richard Barbratto and all the crazy guys in the  5" gun gang. I see a couple of familiar names on the crew list. I transferred to the aircraft carrier USS Constellation in 66, which had no gunnery, and spent the rest of my enlistment deployed to Viet Nam on Yankee station. I am excited to have found this site and will continue to monitor it frequently.

Worked in engine #2. Had a great time with the guys, especially remember Bruce Baker and Dale Rissmiller. Crossed the Arctic Circle & became a blue nose and still have my card and ships patch. Have pictures. Hope to hear from anyone that remembers me. Leland Hudson MM1 in charge of engine 2 gave me my nickname Mac. He always had me make the coffee because he liked the way I made it. I remember going to the N. Atlantic the general alarm sounded just as I sat down to eat lunch, I grabbed my cherry pie off the plate and  headed for my duty station. The alarm sounded because of Russian planes following our convoy, but nothing happened. Had a great time on the N. Atlantic cruise and also in Gitmo.

Actually I served two separate tours on the USS Newport News, I first came aboard in June of 64 and reenlisted on board in country in 68 the USN Deep Sea Diving School then to MCB 53 then MCB 74 then Class C welding @ San Diego then back aboard the News in late 71 and then came October 1, 1972 a day that will go down in infamy. I pray to God that all who survived will have God's peace and mercy poured out upon them. I was in charge of the pipe shop during that last Viet Nam cruise and being a first class petty officer my watch that night was roving security. I was in T1 five minutes prior to explosion. If any more of the crew that was there wants to get in touch with me I would appreciate it. Also if anyone can tell me how to get hold of a crew's book for the last Nam cruise I sure would like to get one as the one that I had ordered never arrived at my address. After leaving the News I went to FMAG at Norva. I discharged in March of 74. I then worked in just about every shipyard in the area. This is getting kinda long so if anyone is interested any further please get in touch by email...Thanks for this page and God Bless all of you.....Ish

I was mainly responsible for getting out the ship's paper every night while sea.  It included cartoons, not too racy pinups (via the Admiral's orders), latest sports scores and some news gotten off the radio shack teletype.  Also prepared information booklets for the foreign ports we hit during our NATO cruises.  I remember those Atlantc storms, but mostly I remember my shipmates and especially that grand old ship, a last of its breed.  I would like to contact YN1 Junkins if possible.

Chief Engineer, Martin Luther Prep School,
Prairie du Chien WI June 1995 (18 years there), Finally retired August 2002
Wausau WI
Reenlisted October 1964, used CruDesLants reenlistment option, home port ship of your choice, I asked for Newport News to get off the small Destroyers. CruDesLant fulfilled their obligation of one year at new duty station. I stayed my year and then back to Destroyers! I had a son born in West VA about a week before reporting on board, before I could get back there we headed for the Dominican Republic when Marines were landed there. I enjoyed the year on board except for the guns and some of the Marines whoused them to pull themselves up in to their bunks, busting the air conditioning freon lines. I retired from RTC Great Lakes, ILL August 1974. in 1979 I went to work as Chief Engineer at Martin Luther Prep School, Prairie du Chien, WI. and retired from there in August 1995. We moved to Wausau, WI where I enlisted from and finally retired August 2002. I am on VA Disability for ASBESTOS related problems. but I keep walking every day to keep my lungs working. October 2003 I ha! >  d a Heart check up and had a couple arteries 85-90% plugged. I received 5 bypasses and am in good shape again.I wasn't sick before the operation, so why be sick afterward! I had the operation before I had a heart attack so there is no heart damage. I am enjoying my retirement. My wife is still working full time, (She is supporting me in the style I am accustomed!) Emailme or call me on the phone, it is on the WEB phone directories. Just remember, THE OLDER WE GET THE GREATER WE WERE! May all of you have FAIRWINDS AND A FOLLOWING SEA

After retirement in 94', worked as Senior Engineering Analyst for Newport News Shipbuilding, managing communications radar and information systems alterations for the SSN688 Class Submarines. Got to view and feel the quarterdeck plaque, given to the new fast attack submarine USS NEWPORT NEWS at commissioning.  Part of Big Thunder still lives.
The USS Newport News (CA-148) was my first shipboard duty. I walked down Pier 7 at the Naval Station in awe with my sea bag on my shoulder. That mighty ship formed the basis for my 30 year career.

It was the best time of my life. I was young and grew up a lot. I got off before the Nam cruise. Thought I would be in Nam sooner that later so I took the early out. I went back home to Nitro WV and worked for the Charleston Daily Mail in the Coposing room. Went to DC and got a job for the Washington Post starting out as a "fly boy" in the pressroom. Got a job as an Electrician. Promoted to Foreman and then as a Maintenace Manager of the mechanical shops. Retired 2005. I often wish I had stayed on board for the Nam cruise.

My most enjoyable duty in Marine Corps was the 2 years I spent
on CA-148.Never forgot those Hot Dogs served to over night
watch. Although they hit the spot I still wonder what they were
made from. My duties were Brow, Brig, Corporal of the Guard,
Marine Barber, Ships laundry, Captain's Orderly, Flag Driver,
and Drill Team. Not to mention all the brass and deck polishing
plus cutting hair on about 40 jarheads about every three days.
Never forget: The cruise in Artic circle in 1966 or 67 when GQ was called at about 0300 to meet the Russian (Bear) aircraft
with all guns locked on and I ended up on starboard/forward 3"/50's in shower shoes. Playmate Flag officer's party on board
ship anchored off West Palm Beach. Female stowaways from
Hamburg, Germany to Portsmouth, England. Some of the best times of my life.

I was on board in 65-67, my memory getting bad, I was in the 3rd division. I picked up the News up after a TA at Little Creek Amphibian Base from boot camp. We went out on N/A Cruise with the Independence, then to Portsmount England then Copenhagen, Bergen Norway up the Mississippi to New Orleans where I got my first tattoo. I was on the Santa Domingo incident. GQ was the third turret in the powder magazine. Pass the bucket please. Used to hang out in the aft radar mount when not on duty just to see what was going on. Night watch station of Aft Starboard fan tail, dam dark back there. I remember getting bused by a Russian MiG. I used to have some great movies of us re-fueling the destroyers and even one when the line broke. First wife took them never to be seen again. The only thing I have left is my original ships patch.

Staying with them for 30 = Yeafs I retired out of Dallas as A V.P. and Moved back to Mi again up to the UP over looking Mackanaw Island on Lake Huron where I'm back to the water where now I'm fishing and enjoying It has taken along time to find the site but it is great to see all the past good and hard times of The NN it was a great ship and great shipmates. Looking to see more of the old menories and friends made.

The NN was a majestic ship, at one time in the late '80s she was waiting to go to Muskegon, MI and be used as a Lakeside Museum, apparently politics got in the way. It was saddening to see the pictures of her demise.  I will always remember walking her teakwood decks, and the sound of her guns.

Charles Sheldon

1965 to 1967
cella1970@ yahoo.com

Is there a way of posting my father's name so I can chat with anyone who remembers him. I would like to know more about my father. He was on the USS Newport News somewhere around 1964 - 1965 I know he met my mother when the ship was in  San Juan Puerto Rico. I even heard of him being in Norfolk, Virginia. That is all the information I have. My Mom passed also so I do not have anyone to ask.

Thanks Celia
Daughter of Charles Sheldon
