Was briefly in NEWPORT NEWS in early 1968 as an RAN exchange officer from
HMAS PERTH. Rode the bridge with CAPT McCarty, main battery
with Bill Foxwell and main battery control with Dexter Goad. She was
a mighty, powerful and happy ship. Am signed up for the
reunion, principally to provide some Aussie couth and culture.
Resigned as a CDR, including DEG command. Am still in the game - my
company provides all the 5"/54 and VLS training to the RAN and we
represent, among others, United Defense, Kollmorgen and AlliantTechsystems.
Am also the President of the HMAS PERTH National Association, so my links
to "Thunder" continue.

My first Navy tour and what a great ship on which to learn
about the Navy. Super camaraderie, critical mission and some
terrific liberty calls. I hated to see the Newport News get
decommissioned and have often wished to be able to go aboard again. I
served on an SSN, a CV and an LHA, but none compare to
"Thunder". Am returning to Washington, DC in June, 2000.

Great web site that brings back so many memories of 3 very
formative years which I still think about often. I'm sure many of you
remember when the chaplin refused to let the ship's crew and officers see
Jane Fonda in "Barbarella" during 2nd Nam cruise. It was hard to believe
then and even more so today. Perhaps 2nd division gunners mates who stood
watch in the turrets will remember me for making batch after batch of
popcorn to help keep us all alert and fed while on watch. I took my three
grown sons to see the NN museum on the Salem and it was amazing how easily
memories came back. I highly recommend a visit. |

Nam aboard the Uss Blandy. We flew to Pearl and picked up the Newport News
there. Rich, sadly was killed in a auto accident two years ago while in
Ga. I stll miss him. We stayed freinds all these years. I left the service
in 1970 and have been a law en forcement officer since. I have been
looking for another shipmate, Kieth Noble if anyone knows where to find

Rich Taylor and I served on the Uss Blandy off the coast of Viet Nam in
1967; we both transfered to the Uss Newport News in 1968 as the Blandy was
heading home. We served together on our 2nd Westpac Cruise in 1968. rich
Taylor was a RM2. Rich retired from AT&T after 30 years with them and
lived in Georgia with his wife Mel and his step kids. He and Mel were on a
road trip through Georgia in 2005 when their car was struck by another.
Rich had time enough to tell Mel that he loved her and then was gone. Mel
has recovered from her injuries and still makes her home just north of
Atlanta. I will miss him forever. |

This web site brings back such great memories of the Newport News. It's
amazing how often I run into people (especially when I'm wearing my ships
cap) who were on other ships or other branches of the service who have
stories to tell about the Grey Ghost. I had an ex-Marine see my hat and
come up to me and tell me how our gunfire support "saved their butts" when
they were pinned down by some VC. We can all be proud to have served on
one of the great ships in Naval history |

I have a lot of good memories of serving onboard NN. I met the best friend
a man could have while on board SAM TOWNSEND of Knoxville,Tn. I worked on
the mess decks when I first got on board until Tom (I can't remember his
last name) got me transfered to the gun division. Tom was in 3rd division.
When was assigned to mount 5. Iran into an old school mate while on board
(Charles Fisher) he was in 2nd division. It really is a small world we
live in. I retired from American General Life & Accident Ins. Co. and
now a Blues Bar in the heart of the Mississippi Delta. Any one coming this
way stop in or a visit. Ilove to meet and talk to people who have served
our great country.

After leave, I was assigned to the USS Newport News on 9/1967. I was part
of the Operation Sea Dragon on 10/1967. I would like to hear from my

After the Navy, I lived in New York for a while and than moved to Bayamom,

My three years on Thunder were some of the most memorable of my life - I
would not trade them for anything. I went to the NN
reunion in 1993 and hope to go again in the future. Many of you may
remember LTjg Henry Mathis in Engineering - sadly he died
in an auto crash in KY around 1982 or 1983. LTjg Don Miller is a
successful architect and LTjg Mike Yopp (2nd Fleet Staff) is a
successful lawyer, both in Nashville, TN. Many of you may remember me as
WA4END/maritime mobile, as I ran phone patches
to home on amateur radio for many of you when we were at sea on our trip
to England, Finland, Germany, Brest, and Casablanca
on our NATO cruise with 2nd Fleet! |

Lots of good memories and some bad memories to live with. The T2
explosion, the number of our shipmates who died in the line of duty, I am
still having nighmares about the explosion. I also remember them good guys
in the S-5 division, Mario Ibisate, Boy Salazar, Fidel Mercado, who
switched rate to MR/A Div., Roger Concepcion, SDC Salera, SDCS Norberto
Labrador, DKCS Mendoza, and all the good crews of the mighty NN. Please

In addition to the OL and NAV divisions, I was assigned to the flag staff
of CRUDESFLOT 9 on the 1968-69 WESTPAC cruise, the second of NN's three
deployments to Vietnam/Tonkin. Gulf. After short summer of 69 in Norfolk,
NN deployed again to the North Atlantic as the flagship of Second Fleet on
a NATO exercise and goodwill cruise to northern Europe and Morroco. I very
much enjoyed my time on board and met some great people. |

Received a fast set of orders to NN in late Oct of 68, while stationed in
Monterey. Little did I know that Thunder was setting sail for WestPac the
day after reporting aboard. The WestPac and North Atlantic cruse of 69 was
without doubt the most memorable sea duty that I had. As I was one that
was always looking ahead and never back I lost track of all the fine men
that I served with. Now retired for the third time I am starting to

After reporting aboard, Captain Snyder selected me to be his personal
Yeoman and Phone Talker. I had the best of jobs, and was lucky enough to
work for a man I grew to love and respect. Sadly, he is not with us any
longer, but his memory rests with all of us who knew him personally. I
retired in 1980 as an NCCS, went back to school earning a degree in
Theology from San Jose State University, married and have two daughters,
20 and 13, now. Once on the gun-line, Capt Snyder told me to watch a
plateau shaped mountain we had just started shelling. After about nine
hits, the whole mountain caved-in: it was full of tunnels. Most of my
memories are snapshots, not too many as they had to survive the Chief's
Club, and 10-years of asian delights as a single sailor. I've been a very
fortunate and lucky man both as a sailor, and a civilian. I sometimes pray
that when I depart this life, I will be able to see those I have known
like Captain Snyder, and others I knew while aboard Thunder. Blessings to
