I was one of the AG's that launched the weather balloons that always ended up in the radio antennas and spread that chaff and glue all over the stern. We tried to tell CDR Kerr (Meteorologist, C2F) what would happen because of high winds but his comment was always "launch it". I recall many fond memories while aboard and would have stayed for "30" but I went with the Flag to the Little Rock (CLG-4) and on. My daughter is an artist and is doing an oil painting for me of the Grey Ghost in a North Atlantic setting. I discovered the web site in doing the research. Memories as clear as if it were last week. Two North Atlantic cruises, the Kiel Canal, Cuban Crisis, TAD with the 2nd Fleet Command twice and lots of Caribbean cruises. Radar watches in COTP, on the bridge and lots of war games down in CIC. Mid watch as bow lookout on a cold foggy night making way North through the English Channel. Being lost in a storm for 2 days in the Norwegian Sea. Wow! Gas it up I'm ready to go again! Oh ya....the sound & feel of those 8"guns unloading. What a blast! What a great ship! What a great experience! Thank You Navy!!

I have always held a special spot for the Newport News. Being in the After Steering section, I got to check the gauges for
air-conditioning throughout the ship and got to see parts of the ship that a lot never saw. I remember the Cuban Crisis and
the Russian ships with girls and Vodka. Had wait to board her after her N. Atlantic cruise and left before the refit and world
cruise. Oh well someone enjoyed it.

I came aboard just prior to the Cuban Blocade and served on board until July 1965 getting discharged while we were in drydock prior to Viet Nam deployment. Most of my time on board I was in sidecleaners swinging over the side on a bosun's chair. I also did alot of the fancy work, knotboards, bunting etc. Played alot of softball when we could get games up, I remember playing a game in Norway and quite a few in Puerto Rico. Chester Miller was my pitcher and I was the catcher most of the time. Bobby Edwards played shortstop.

Came aboard just prior to Cuban Crisis in 10/62. NN was 2nd Fleet Flag at time. Spent Cuban Crisis chasing Russian ships during week, and spending weekends at San Juan. Remember going to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic during a crisis there, probably early '63. Also remember a "liquor run" to the Virgin Islands,probably late '62,early '63. In Feb/Mar '63 we made a cruise to Orlando(I think),Ft Lauderdale(I remember for sure? because paid a visit to the "elbow room" bar. From there around Key West to Mobile (the Admiral's home, I believe)in time for Mardi Gras. Spent a week there. I know I had a good time, I just don't remember how good!Left about May '63 for Hospital Corps School, Great Lakes. I have nothing but fond memories of the NN. She was my first taste of active duty Navy, and I couldn't have had a better start to my 10 yr Navy career.

Yes I have many fond memories of my time aboard the 'Newpy News' I came aboard in July 63 after being bounced from the Naval Academy and came aboard as a Quartermaster Sticker then approx. 6 mos. later changed rating and became the Chaplain's Asst. Many of you who where aboard during that period 7/63-6/65 will remember our late night movie sessions back in the library when we were at sea. I know I ran them. I
am trying to find the Chaplain that I worked under but am having difficulty.. his name was Chaplain Rittenhouse if anyone has any information please reply.

the news was my first duty station while i was waiting for an opening at mma school at great lakes .I went up the mississippi river to meet up with a british frigate as i recall for a centenial cermony in new orleans.....she was flag ship 2 fleet then....I even got to Holy stone those decks...I always remembered those days on her and always will ...I also remember those 9 round salvos during gunnery practice.especialy when i put my eye up to the overboard discharge port from my fire station..I thought my eyeball went to the back of my head...........fun memories..........

After nearly 4 years on Thunder I extended to go on Swift Boats in Nam.  I spent my last night on Thunder in March of 67 as Boatswainsmate of the Watch and announced over the 1MC the movie for the evening as "The Gay Men from Rio" (not the real title) and then named all of my buddies as starring in the movie. (My last shot at rebellion!)  As I was leaving the ship the next morning for my new duty station, the Sergeant at Arms told me that if I didn't have my orders in hand, I would be going to Mast that day.  The one thing that always bothered me was the sign that said "Officers Country, Keep Out". When I finally made BM3, I hung a sign at the entrance to 4th Division quarters that said, "Enlisted Men's Quarters, Keep Out."  It only hung there one day before our division officer ordered me to take it down, but it felt good while it hung there.

I was very proud to serve with the guys from 1st Div/1 Alpha and the Deck Divisions. I remember all the older guys taking my ice cream and popcorn from the ship's store. You guys owe me!! Very glad to have found this webpage. I recognize a few of the names from the list. I sure do miss the Captain's White Glove inspections!! And having to come to attention on the Mess Deck to serve butter during mess cooking! Those were the good ol' days. My how the Navy has change!! Don't even know what it should be called today?! I checked onboard after boot camp leave. I was part of a Radioman program to give us shipboard experience prior to going to RMA School. Naturally I went mess cooking for 3 months and chipped
lots of paint but I did stand watches eventually in one of the HF transmitter rooms. I served on six ships and overseas and several schools including RMB. Commissioned as CWO and eventually
promoted from CWO3 to LTJG LDO. Finally retired with 31 years service as LCDR and XO of Naval Computer and Telecommunications Command NAS Pensacola. I've always regarded the Newport News as the only real ship of the old navy I served in and have many pleasant memories even though onboard a short time.
