These were 4 of the best years of my life.I met a lot of wonderful people.
There is not to many days that go by I do not think of the hard work and
fun we all had. I would like to get in touch with anyone from my ship,
especially Vinny Vetere, John Guarin, Richard Bunch, Bernie Epstein. I
fondly remember riding the Greyhound from the big piers at Norfolk to
Baltimore with most of these guys, and boy what a time we had....God Bless

appreciate living the the US. I think I learned more about world politics and human rights
from seeing the Berlin Wall from (the wrong side) East Berlin and the fence at Gitmo (remember
the mine field along the third base line?) than I did later in college and grad. school. I

What a great ship the News was.Came aboard right out of boot camp 1961.I
was in 1st div.as a deck hand for awhile then became a Gunners Mate and
was assigned to Turret 1 then went to fox div. and worked in the armory.I
lift the News 12/64 Looking forward to hearing from anyone who served with
me or anyone who would like to swap sea stories.I stayed in the Navy for
11yrs.From the News I went to Ft. Allen, Ponce, Puerto Rico Where I was SP
& In Charge of the armory. Then went aboard USS America Viet nam tour.
Then went to Ft.Schuyler in Bronx N.Y Where I was an instrector at the
Maritime College. Got out as a GMG1 Sept.1972. But the best of all the
duties was the USS Newport News. |

I was in turret two after a short period in 2nd division deck force where
i stayed for the rest of navy hitch. Ingram was a BM2 then and was soon
after advance to BM1. When I was asked to join the turret crew Predix was
on leave because his father died. I boarded the News in Livarno(Leghorn)(?)
Italy. The turrett crew then was Mac McCraken,Thomas Carl Gregovich, Steve
Gibson,Richard Kearney,Glenn McKenny,Gerold Risco,Albert Hoovler( whom I
talked to in 1983, still living in Pa.)John David Malarkey,Myron D Hoover.
Paul Lougee was also in the turret for a period of time.
I remember many of the names that I have seen here(ie,Sollee). My tour
aboard the news was one that I have always cherished. I am now building a
frontier town here in central Ohio for a Bed & Breakfast. Involved in
pleasure horses. If there is ever a need for a place to have a reunion and

Serving aboard the News and with you guys was the major turning point in
my life. I was transfered to the USS Stormes after leaving the NEWS and
what a difference that was. I affilated with the reserve program after
being discharged and served on 15 different ships over the next 32 years
and none came even close to the ship known as Big Thunder and her crew.
Fially made my WESTPAC in 1987. I retired as a YNCM(SW. I used my G.I.
Bill to complete college at the same time and retired from A&M University
Extension Service. I would love to hear from any crewmember who remembers
me. MED cruise, North Atlantic, Caribbean, Cuban Crisis, oh what memories.
I worked in the Captain's Office while aboard. Thanks to each and every
one of you for setting the example for a young man who very much needed
it.

When I first reported to the New Port
News in July of 1961 I was with a group of 10 or 12 reservist called to
active duty a little early because of the Berlin Crisis. The ship was on
a Med. Cruise and we caught up with her in Athens. She was anchored out
and as we approached in a motor whale boat I thought she was just
beautiful. I did'nt even know what a heavy cruiser was until then. Most
of us reported straight to the deck force. I went to 6th div. for about 9
months. My typing skills landed me in EX div. working for Chaplian
Hammond. I was on the bridge during the Cuban Missle Crisis when we ran
down the Russian ship and trained a foward 8 inch turrett toward her
because she would not respond to the our demands to inspect the missle
tubes on deck. I had some great friends on the News that I hope to see
again, YN3 Kerry Austin, SN Dennis Beebe, SN Don Burgess, SN Jim
Brandenburg, SN Jim Bazakis, PN3 Jonh Troxel. Never forget those guys or
that beautiful ship. |

I served on (3) ships during my nine year naval career, and the Newport
News was the best. I remember the Cuban Missle Crisis - the long hours in
crypto breaking message traffic. And the port and starboard duty, which I
don't miss! WE had some great North Atlantic cruises, not to metion San
Juan... God, I remember Butch, Bruce, Bob, Blaze, "Desilu", Leo,
Charlie... Were we truly that young once. I am retire now - from the air
force. 26 years total service - Navy, Army and Air Force. Presently
serving as President of the San Antonio Living History Association. You'll
never guess what character I'm playing - David Crockett. Have been in
several movies for the History Channel and PBS. Most notably, "Remember
the Alamo" & "War of 1812". Couldn't help noticing Leo's name on the list
and Dennis... What ever happend to Omar??? |

My tour on the 'News' is one of the great memories of my life. Learned a
lot, laughed a lot and lived a lot. I still remember my first and my last
look at her, awe inspiring beauty. Still get a twinge when I see a
picture of her. So sad to see her stripped and waiting to be scrapped,
the only image of her I regret seeing. I could have done without that.
Still have fond memories of my shipmates and our adventures together.
After the Navy, I went into the Coast Guard, Base Miami, Air Station St
Pete, Base Sand Island Hawaii, Cutter Mellon WHEC-717. None of it as
special as the News. Take care mates! |

North Atlantic cruises plus the Blockade, where we spent hours in
the number 2 turret awaiting a rumored Russian
