To all my engineering dept friends who served on board
with me I would like to just say this "I used to not know how
to spell enjoneer and now I were one" Having served as Chief
Engineer of USS Eldorado (AGC-11) USS Canberra (CAG-2)
and USS Chicago (CG-11). Of all the ships which I served on in my 30 years of Naval service my fondest memories are those of the USS Newport News. I retired from Naval service in  1975 as Commanding Officer of the Naval Reserve Center in Fort Smith, Ark.Although I retired as LCDR I finally realized my life-long dream of being  CO  and being addressed as "CAPTAIN". I knew learning to spell 'engineer' correctly   would pay off someday.

I was assigned to NN prior to her being commissioned. I rode a tug boat round trip, daily, from Norfolk to Newport News until she was commissioned. I have many fond memories of serving on NN. I felt very depressed when I heard she was scrapped. I am proud to be a plank owner.

Would like to hear from anyone that remembers me from the deck div or I was striking for radioman for about six months also. It really brought back some old memories when I found this web site. Assigned to commissioning crew from boot camp, San Diego. Stayed aboard for the shake down and Arctic cruise where I got my blue nose. Most notable achievement was as radar operator in turret three and the turret hit too close to a target sled lifting it clear of the water. Transferred to USS Rochester (CA 124) in 1/50 and went to Korea and was awarded three battle stars (Pusan,Inchon,& Hungnam) still in the main battery.

I was a member of the commissioning crew of the Newport News, and served on the ship from December, 1948 until August 1950. My rank was Ensign and later Ltjg. I was in the gunnery, and later the navigation department.  I had graduated from the Naval Academy in 1947. I served under Captain (later Admiral) Roland Smoot, and later under Captain Laidlaw. I was transferred to the USS Latimer in Sept., 1950.      I made many friends while serving on the Newport News.  I have fond memories of the Mediterranean cruise in 1950, when we were the flagship of ComNavMed. This web page is wonderful, and I congratulate those who put it together and keep it up. I found this site by pure luck, and am so thankful that I did because of the memories that it conjures up.    Another fond memory of mine is of the baseball team which I managed, and which won the CruLant championship in 1949.I would love to hear from any of my shipmates who might remember this lowly officer of many years ago.
I was baseball officer during my tenure and have fond remembrances of my teammates. Capt. Smoot was the finest commanding officer I served with during my six years active service. I would like very much to hear from any shipmates still alive

I left in May 1952 to go to the Missouri. She was going to Korea and needed firecontrol people. Came back May 1953 and took the Naval Academy people on a summer cruise to Rio. Got discharged in Sept. Started college at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and graduated June 1957 as an Electrical Engineer. The G. I. Bill sure helped to pay for it.  I have attended four reunions.  The last one held in Charleston, SC. was by far the best.  Your web site is the greatest.  Came right from boot camp and served in the Gunnery Office and as Legal Yeoman until. transferring into the Sixth Fleet Flag allowance as their legal yeoman.
Served 30 years, retired CWO4, avoided all the paper work I could, and became a "professional volunteer" both in the community, church and school affiliate.  I have nothing but positive memories of the ship, shipmates and especially for the leadership shown to me and sending me on to a
great navy career.

I am listing this for my father, he passed away 1 Mar 1999. I do this for he always had a soft spot for the Newport News. I think this was his favorite ship of all those he served on. I wish I had known of this site before his death. If anyone remembers him please e-mail me. I think there are some pics in his papers. So if any of you remember him please contact me. I was born in Sept after the Newport News was commissioned. Also his "Plank Owner" certificate.

Assigned to NN right out of boot camp in Great Lakes, IL. Rode boats from Portsmouth, VA to Newport News every day to ready the ship for commissioning. Was on the commissioning crew in January of 49. Worked as a metalsmith under direction of my assigned teacher Pippin. Was on the shakedown cruise to Cuba and Carribean ports. NN was the only ship I served on. Drove a bus while stationed in Norfolk in preparation for discharge in 1952. The Navy transformed me from a boy to a man. Have slides of all ports we sailed to and many great memories of the adventures in various ports of call. Best event was Christmas 1951 when we put in to Naples and distributed all the toys and presents we had ordered from Sears to the orphans of Naples. Spent many happy hours of liberty in Villa Franche. Would love to hear from any shipmates

Timothy R. ("Root") Young
SGT./Marine Detachment
02/49 to 07/51
DrMarkEYoungSr@ aol.com
Col. (VA ARNG & USAR ret.) & Prof. of Economics; Chairman Busn. Dept.
Petersburg, VA
He started his deployment as a PFC, 522 Sea Guard & 745 Inf. Rifleman, then 0771 20mmAA MG & 5800 Guard, promoted to Cpl., 0311 Inf. Unit Leader, and then Sgt. 5831 Guard NCO, 0311 Section Ldr., MG plt., FMF. He served as body guard for King Paul and Queen Fredrika of Greece while they were onboard. He also served as a guard for the Admiral and other visiting dignitaries who visited, including General Omar Bradley and Secretary of Defense, Charles Wilson. He guarded other dignitaries such as Rita Hayworth, and her husband the Ali Khan. Also known for his marksmanship, Sgt. Young was largely responsible for his group besting a unit of the Queen's Royal Marines in a rifle match while on tour in the Mediterranean.

Sgt. Young, Left the ship in July, 1951 to go ashore and fight with the Wpns.Co. 3rd Bn 7th. Marines, 1stMarDiv, in Korea. He fought heroically and was selected to represent (carried the
colors) the entire 1st Marine Div. in Ike's inaugural Parade. Before leaving Korea, General James A. Van Fleet gave a farewell review to the "collection of heroes" (including Sgt. Young) from the 8th Army who were selected to march in Eisenhour's
inaugural parade. Gen. Van Fleet called them "the greatest collection of heroes that perhaps has ever been assembled - significant of a great Army."

His picture appeared on the front page of the Washington Post and in Time Magazine. He met Eisenhour twice, once in the field and after he was President. The first time he met Ike in the field, Gen. Ike singled my father out (Dad was 6'4" and stood out) and asked him how he got to be so big. Dad, barked back in true USMC form, "Sir, I eat a lot of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, Sir!" Years later at Ike's Inaugural festivities, Ike spotted my father again and approached him. Pres. Ike
said, "Son, I see your still eating those peanut butter and jelly sandwiches." We were so amazed that the President would have remembered my father and much less his comment years
before that. Dad went on to make the USS Newport News proud. He joined the VaArng and Army Reserve and attained the rank of Col. He was the highest "military" educated officer and also earned 7 Master's degrees and was Chairman of the business department at William & Mary's Ricard Bland College in Petersburg, VA. Dad passed away at age 50 in 1981.
I'd love to hear from his shipmates! My warmest regards to all of you who served on this beautiful ship! Respectfully, Dr. Mark E. Young, Sr. (son)
