Don was my uncle, unfortunately he passed away on January 5, 2004, he
never got to see this web site. I bought him a USS NN cap, pin & mug
for christmas and told him about the web site. He said when he got back
from Florida on January 19th he'd look into it... I just thought I'd put
his name out there to let his shipmates know of his passing. By the way he
was very excited with the cap...we buried him with it. |

I came abord the Newport News after serving a tour in Korea on the USS
Wisconsin BB-64. The NN was like a "cruise" ship compared to the Battle
Ship. I enjoyed my tour on the NN every moment. I would like to hear from

I am writing on behalf of my father Wes Kennedy, known as Ken to his
friends aboard ship. I am sorry to say that I just found this site in
August of 2006. My father passed away in August 2003. Dad was extremely
proud of his time aboard the fine vessel you all called home for a portion
of your lives. I myself joined the Navy and served proudly and was very
fortunate to walk the decks of the "News" while she was in Philadelphia
Naval Shipyard. I felt honored to walk through the same p-ways and
berthing areas that my father had, and you all had as well. This web page
is fantastic and shows the tremendous pride you all have for a fine ship.
My father would have loved to see this, and to have been able to contact
all his shipmates.

I made one cruise on this ship and that was from January To May 1953(I
still have my cruise book in front of me)After the cruise I was
transferred to the USS Wisconsin and made nine-month cruise
on her to the fareast. After that cruise I was transferred to
another greyhound USS Des Moines and made a med cruise and part of another
med cruise on her. I left her sitting at med moor in Naples and rode a
destroyer back to newport rhode island for discharge. I returned to the
navy in 1958(I couldnt hack working in a cotton
mil down in North Carolina. I stayed in the navy until I was able to
retire as RMCS and then I worked at Cinclantflt for 14 more years before
giving it up. I had enough of civil service and would not recommend
it anyone. Like some of your other members I remember them BABES in Villa
France and the cuties in Yokosuka. Dont do them things anymore hi hi.....golf,fish,
and hunt now. |

life during my 23 months on the Newport News. I want to keep the 'cruise

I am Roy's brother, Michael.
Roy was killed in a car accident shortly after leaving the ship. A picture
of CA 148 has hung in our home all these years and I got to go on board in
1993, a few days before it was towed out of Philadelphia to be scrapped. I
have lost touch with his best friend and shipmate, Mike McCloskey. If any

Harmon Fowler (since deceased). I was immediately in demand for mess
cooking duties, but the Sr. PO put me right to work repairing radar.
It was a wonderful experience to go on that Med cruise. Thereafter,
I transferred to the U.S.S. Pittsburgh CA-72 and cruised the Orient. |

Engine Three; the farthest aft of the four engine rooms. Newport News was
the most beautiful ship in which I served during my entire 24 years of
active Naval service. The lessons I learned there formed the foundation of

the news hat all the time. At now 79 i have forgot many names but not the
ship.I was on LSTS WW2, the News& MO were like cruise ships.I Neverknew

Was Capt. phone talker during refuelling and entering port. Had a great

I am writing on behalf of my husband, who died on May 3, 1998 of
emphysema, in Fullerton, CA. Some of his shipmates that I remember
him telling stories about were guys named "Quackie" (Quackenbush)
who played the guitar, Jim Hobbs, who once saved his life when he was
drowning in the pool of the Caribe Hilton in Guantanamo (too much booze),
and "Ski" (but I see there are many Skis listed). I am not
sure, but I think the Ski who knew my husband was Jablonski. If any
of these guys are still alive, I would love any stories about my husband.
I was going with him all the time he was on the Newport News, and we were
married in June, 1959, after he got out of the Navy. He had two sons
and a daughter and lived his last years (about 10) in California, although
he was born in Brooklyn, New York. Everyone on the ship at the time
my husband was serving will remember when they had to stop all engines and
lay dead in the water while the only MD on board (a pediatrician) operated
on him to remove his appendix. It was on one of the Med
Cruises. So, anyone who is still alive out there that remembers
Robbie? When he was in boot camp, they had to send away specially to
get leggings to fit his thin legs. He was always super thin
(5'10", 128 pounds). Oh, and he loved to play cards and usually got
up some games by his bunk. He was very proud of the "Newsy News"
and sad when it was decommissioned and he was told it went to the
Philadelphia Navy Yard to be scavenged for parts. Was it
saved? Thanks, guys. |

Shipboard life was FUN . . . worked in the Forward Supply Room for a short
period and transferred to After Store Room for 3 months then to Supply
Office and worked for CDR Waters (until he left the ship) and that's where
I finished my tenure. Enjoyed two cruises to the Mediterranean in
1955 and 1956, several trips to the Caribbean, one trip to the Canal Zone,
one trip to Jax, FL to pick up a new Captain and then Fourth of July in
New York City. I still stay in touch with both Jack (Jackie L.)
Johnson in Oak Ridge, TN and Chief Yeoman (Retired) Ralph Mosgrove in St.
Petersburg, Florida. I'm interested in the history of the ship since
I left her in 1956 and would love to hear from anyone who we associated
with. |

Worked with several ex-NN crew members in NYFD, all great guys.
Visited Villa in '98 & '00, many changes in over 40 years. No
fleet visits, but plenty of cruise ships. One bar on the 02 and it
was closed. See the movie "Ronin" for a visit to the old
home port. Made reunions since '93 and have hooked up again with old
radar gang mates, Hop Hopkins and Bob (The Rebel) Pierce. Made the
last Salem work party with Hop, and we'll probably be at the next, Sept.

This picture was taken aboard the Newport News possibly taken in
1954. My father, John "Jay" Broughton, lst Class Chief Petty Officer is
pictured on the right. His friend, Bill Moran, is pictured on the left. It
would be nice to be able to identify the other sailors. My father would
have been aboard the Newport News when it sailed to the Mediterranean in
January, 1954. I think this picture was probably taken when they returned
to Portsmouth, Va in May of that year. My father is no longer living.
He died on January 12, 1975, from a second heart attack at the age of 55.
His wish was "to be kicked off a tin can in a tin can". He was so buried in
the Pacific Ocean with full military honors following his death. He was a
career Navy man, serving actively for 20 years. It was great to find this
website and know that he served with some great men.

Just found the web page. Would like to hear from anyone. Ships
Boatswain Locker most of my duty. Side Cleaners division was responsible
for foul weather locker, sail locker and ships boatswain locker, of which I was
in charge of.
