The nickname above "Midwest Puke" was assigned me by my immediate boss, Chief Castellucci, who was from Connecticut and didn't like folks from this side of the Appalchians! ;-)  I would like to find the old chief and also my former co-editor of The Thunderbolt, the ship's at-sea daily newspaper.  One funny incident I remember (at least in retrospect) is when Clem and I decide to run AP and Tass stories on a race riot in the U.S. side-by-side on the front page.  We thought the comparison made obvious the propogandist nature of the Soviet reporting.  The captain had another view!  We were called before the mast and told never to commit this "sin" again! ;-)

I'm still working with USN vessels and have been since leaving the active duty  navy, i.e., in the ship repair and alteration business. My opinion of the " Grey Ghost":  One gorgeous and effective war ship as we demonstrated to the enemy time and again off the NVN Coast! Not only was she a special ship, but, to this day, I feel we had the finest skipper and crew ever to ride a man-of-war.  Am I prejudiced? You betcha!

I was on the USS Walton , DE 361 - USS  NN - USS Semmes , DDG 18 , USS Higbee , DD - USS Pledge , MSO , USS Paul Revere , APA - USS Alamo , LSD 33 - USS Tarawa , LHA1 - RNCB 2 , Det. 15 -twice - USS Cone , DD366 Charleston , S.C. then ret. from RNCB 2 , Mobil Hospital Group assigned to Millington , TN . last duty station after 23 yrs. NN was the best duty and the best ship I was ever on , sad to know she is gone I last seen her in Philly in 1980 while the Cone was in the yard being overhauled . It's just sad to see the scrap yard pics . I ret. as MS1 . I also served with my twin brother John who worked in bake shop

Wm.J. (Billy) (Max) (Kink)  Kinkel
BM3/7th, Honor Side Boys, BM of the Watch, EX ,4th,
02/66 to 06/68
maxkinkel@ aol.com

http://www.MaxTalkRadio.com

Radio and Television Broadcaster
Pompton Lakes, New Jersey
Since 1971, I have been known now as Max Kinkel, and for the last 20yr's, of my 30 year career in Show Business I have been in New York City on Radio & Television doing music & comedy on the phone w/listeners. In 1999, I fell in love with doing "All" Talk Radio. In 1971 after the loss of my first son, who was to be named Max, to honor his Spirit, I took his name. Ever since then I have been known as Max Kinkel.
Having been transferred from 7th division to Ex division, with help from My buddy Bob Myers in Ex div.who was Petty Officer in charge of Special Services, and also the Shipboard Radio Station. Bob hailed from Catskill New York, and with whom I shared car expenses with for driving home on weekend liberties, helped me transfer into Ex division. Upon the word that NN was transferring our ComSecFleet Flag to Com7thFleet Flag, heading for WesPacOps, Bob Myers was too short, I assumed as senior person in Special Services and the ship board Radio Station.
In June of 67' knowing full well that our ship was heading to Vietnam, I surveyed the ships crew with hopes of finding their favorite type of radio station they would like, and overwhelmingly it was New York City's WABC,...So that is who I went to see, and I acquired from then morning man Herb Oscar Anderson, known as HOA, he kindly saw to it that the programming dept gave me all the stations jingles, so that we were able to try and duplicate Music Radio 77WABC New York City on board Newport News. We were 16,ooo miles away from home, and next to the jingles, that is the closest we came to fulfilling the intent. In the end, the jingles attained the goal, and in itself, that achieved my goal that I had set for myself at the onset. My desire was to help all my fellow shipmates, to endure those moments we all shared, when those who felt the pangs of the heart, sadden by their loneliness for those close to him, such feelings are only exacerbated by the isolation ship of standing!
of condition III watches and the un-ending GQ's that took precedence over our lives, ... So, it was my desire to bring a modicum of joy to our shipmates, by giving all kinds of radio to the ship, R&B, Rock n'Roll, and Country for the crew, and we held open auditions for those seeking to be DJ's. It was great to have guys come up to the Radio Station, located right next to the ships Gee Dunk, and say they liked the station and what we were doing. It was because of that shipboard radio station that I made a 35 year career of it with stations like The Big 8 CKLW Detroit, NBC radio, CBS radio, K-Rock NYC w/Howard Stern. Since 1999 I have been into Talk Radio, my entire career, Press clippings, etc, can be seen by going to my website.

After leaving in 68, I served aboard the USS Robert K. Huntington & USS. Stickell, then on to three naval air stations & was medically retired in 1975, just a few days before they decommissioned the "NN", If any one wishes to email me please do.

Those were some good times, sure did get around the world. The best was the North Atlantic and going to Oslo, Norway. My grandfather came from Stavanger, Norway. His family had tickets for me to fly there, if I could get leave and I was able to get a 2 day leave. I didn't have any idea this was going to happen. So that was very special.

I remember my days in NN with great fondness and am pleased to see so many 3ird and Fox division shipmates and wardroom members in these pages.  It's good to relive one's youth.  I retired as a Captain in '98 after a typical surface line career and having commanded an FFG and a Naval Station (Phila).  Been married for 29 years--met my wife Kate when we were both teaching at the Naval Academy (she as one of the first three women to teach there).  We're enjoying active retirement in the DC area, mostly trying to stay ahead of a large yard and to control two Scottish terriers. Would enjoy hearing from old shipmates anytime.

Finally retired last year, moved out here to Las Vegas to be close to our sons.  We are expecting our first grandchild in February.  Anybody ever know what happened to Jim Galen?  I was very proud to have served aboard "Thunder" and I am exceptionally proud to have known such a valliant crew.  We had some very good times together and the guys in 1st Div and Side Cleaners will always be my brothers.  I still laugh when I think about the time Augie (Augustine) came down into the compartment with 2 eyeballs tatoo'd on his butt cheeks.  You guys will always be in my memories and my prayers.
