Proud to say I was a founding Director of the USS Newport News Museum and
Memorial Foundation. The museum we have built on the USS Salem is a
tribute to the legacy of all that sailed on the Newport News. It has been
a privilege to work with so many shipmates, their friends and families at
building out the museum and helping preserve the Salem. As a two time
Westpac sailor, my greatest thrill was June 2003 when we piped aboard my
two former commanders, Lindsay McCarty and Edwin Snyder. I look forward to
seeing old and new friends at our workparties and reunions |

I'm proud to have served on one of the BEST ships in
the US Navy! Great times - Good Friends. Great experience serving on the
first Vietnam Cruise. After our Chief Petty Officer "left" on the way
over to 'Nam I "ran" the Print Shop...got a million "McHale's Nave Type"
stories to tell... Last time I saw "Thunder" she was in moth balls... saw
her as I traveled across a bridge on the Interstate outside Philly... back
in 1986... Sad to see photos of her being scrapped. Should've use CA148
for the historic site instead of Salem... my opinion... |

I wish I had my Vietnam medals I loaned to a Seamen by the last or first name of Marshall. He said he lost his medals.
There was a Personnel inspection. The seaman in question never mailed my medals to me as he promised.
I was 20 years old then. Currently I am 53. Those medals had a lot of sentimental value to me. The Navy was
my first job, I was a kitty cruiser. I have not been able to find those medals in a navy surplus
store. Also, I wish I could find a navy pea coat in size 40 or 42. The day I was
separated from active duty, the ship was having a personnel inspection in port, Norfolk Virginia. I should not
have been so naive in loaning out my medals the last day of active duty. I didn't know it then,
my time in the navy was the best time of my young life at that time. Sometimes I feel should have
did my 20 years. If God willed, I could have retired at 37 years old. Oh well,
that's life. |

that one Viet Nam deployment. I left for San Diego for two years, just a

I served on the USS Tweety DE 532, before coming aboard Thunder. I was
assigned to the deck force at the bow until I grew my sea legs, chipping
and painting and soon advanced to mess cooking, the food was really good
too! I got on night duty so I got to see a lot of you guys coming for
midrats and snacks. The cooks were really good guys, they fed mess cooks
well, even giving us steaks from the officers freezer reefers. The bakers
were the best, fresh bread and tuna salad sandwithes with the bread still
hot! I had laundry duty and later Fred Koch, the barber from Ohio, taught
me to cut hair. Then I moved to the chief's and first class barbershop and
then to the officers. I was honored to meet some really great guys, both
enlisted and officers too. That was fantastic duty,a lot of them were
balding and it took only a few minutes to trim them up. I had a lot of
free time up there, I was down the passageway from the chapel. A lot of
you guys used to get me to trim your hair and save your sideburns. The
hard part was getting up to the shop and not getting stopped. The marines
guarded that area really tight. I still remember taking on fuel and having
the pigtail detail and taking on stores and ammo. I heard someone say we
shot over 47,000 rounds on the first tour. I am proud to have served with
you guys, it was a great way to grow up fast! I guess we had about as many
varieties of guys from every kind of background and somehow we all seemed
to get along pretty good, confined to a small area. Sometimes I think of
some of the times we had and how much we trusted each other. I loaned a
lot of money without interest, I never lost a dime of it, so I think it
was a great crew to have served with! A lot of you guys did favors for me,
sorry I don't remember your names but I remember one of you guys cutting
and polishing the base of a shell casing for me to make an ashtray for my
daddy. He even welded bent coins to hold his cigars. Daddy is gone now,
but I still have the shell! One of the ship's photographers used to help
me learn how to use my cameras. I never thought it would be my career
after I got out, but he did me a lot of favors.
I had a Canon Super 8 movie camera that I used to shoot the incident when
we took the Vietcong aboard and the sharks were all over them. I was about
10' from them when they came aboard. I really felt sorry for those guys.
My son David served with the third ID when they took Saddams palace. He is
70% disabled from the raid. My daddy was a POW in WWII in Germany. When he
was liberated, he was only 67 pounds and it took 2 years to get him back
to his health. We sure had it easy compared to what they went through.
Looking back, those years on Thunder were great times, we lived and grew
up it a time that will never be matched. I remember buying sharkskin
blues lined in silk in Japan and paid the guy in cash and a few weeks
later, my blues came in the mail. I never doubted the guys honesty. I
remember we used to keep our wallet under our mattress with cash and never
missed a dime.
God bless all of you great guys, and smooth seas.
ps Does anyone remember Costello, the big guy who ran the galley. He told
us a lot of tales that I still think about sometimes. Does anyone remember
the pendelum at #2 mess deck going to 45 degrees? |

What I said before still stands: The first Nam Cruise wasn't a whole
lot of fun - long hours and lots of noise. I did get to go a lot of
places (Hong Kong, Pearl Harbor, Japan) that I probably wouldn't get to go
any other way. Had a good time with the people I met, working both
in Communications and in the Captain's Office with Clyde David, Senior
Chief Kolasci, and YN1 Sepulveda. Would give the world to live it
all again, walk the decks, stand in pay and chow lines, feel the ship sway
while underway. Great folks and some not so great, but we were the
Crew of the "World's Largest Heavy Cruiser". Not a whole
lot of people can say that. |

I just happen to stumble onto this site. Newport News was the best duty I
had during my 20 year career. I even turned down shore duty orders to stay
on her. It was really a shame she had to be destroyed in the manner she
was. Anyone who wishes to write, I would love to hear from you. |

Have often thought about days aboard with some fond memories and some not
so fond. Battle off coast of Vietnam in Tonkin Gulf that led to my
breaking my foot was not so fond. Still paying for that one.:-{ Was
really bumbed out when I heard they scrapped the News. She was a grand ol
ship and I am proud to have served aboard her, even if I was just a Marine
;-}. Semper Fi. My son is now in the Navy and is a Officer Candidate. He
has been in for almost 9 years and is a Rescue Swimmer and Air Warfare
Specialist. Very, very proud of him.

We all grew up on that 1st cruise. Lots of fond memories. Dick Bradway (I
still have your sea bag and I think you might have mine), Mike Yoch, and a
bunch of names that unfortunately I've forgotten. Lots of good memories.
Only place I never got to was Austrailia on the second cruise. ASs I
remember we were supposed to go to Perth, Austrailia as we opperated with
nthe HMS Perth on the 1st cruise ( I was in Boston Naval Shipyards when
the Perth was commissioned)... my 1st lesson in how small the world really
is..... It would be good to hear from any of the guys... |

The Newport News was the finest ship that I ever served on - bar none.
After leaving the NN I served in three DDGs,USS Conygham(DDG-17) OPS, USS
Dahlgren(DLG-12) OPS/XO ,and USS John King(DDG-3)XO Also served on various
staffs and training billets in Norfolk area. Retired from CO Fleet
Training Unit Atlantic, NAB Little Creek in Nov '84. Now using my
architecture training to design laboratories for the Navy at Naval Surface
Warfare Center, Dahlgren Va. BMCM Virgil Jennings leading
Chief on NN always said "There's a world
of difference between the cruiser/ Battleship navy and the rest of
the surface fleet" BOY! was he right. I've served
on some fine ships, but they were not the Newport News. I think of her
every day. My best to each and everyone of you who served on the
"Gray Ghost from the US East Coast" you and she were the best. |

What an experience for a dumb kid from Ohio. The time in the Navy on the
USS Newport News or Thunder was an adventure and memory I truly treasure,
the two Westpac cruises, the hard work, the great liberty ports, the
growing up experience or "right of passage".....damn....lets get together
and do it all again!!..........hope to hear from R division
warriors....what ever happened to Joey Holloran, his brother Jim?, Hiram
Williamson and all the newbees on the second cruise? I have been in
Florida since '74, and married for 33 years, 4 kids thru college and semi
retired, wife and I travel and just got back from cruise Norwegian Lines
thru the Med.....had all the memories come flooding back ..bulkhead,
overhead, passageway, port and starboard...had a ball telling the wife.
Didn't we have some times... |

embarked on the NN. Except for trying to sleep in a stateroom directly
across the passageway from the barbett on turret #2, while it was firing,
the experience was absouletly the best. My films were loaned to Howard
Tucner, the NBC reporter who did the story for the Huntley-Brinkley

he can make DVD recording of the film. Many great memories of the ship

I had too much fun with the guys in all the Far East ports.I wouldn't
trade that for anything.
The most nerve racking was North Korea, and the Pueblo, and Look Magazine.
I should have stayed in. |
