My time on the big boat was very exciting and at times, very scary.It made
me grow up faster than I had preferred. Hope to catch up with alot of my
shipmates. Feel free to E-mail me anytime. Hope a reunion of some sort is
in the works.Florida would be a great place to have it.I could possibly
find some nice things to see(ha ha!) All of my medals,pictures and awards
of those days are in my exwifes possession. She said when I grow up, I can
have them back, but she does let me travel down the road of memories every
so often.Makes me realize how young we were. After all said and down, I'd

"Galloping Gray Ghost from the East Coast" what a schock it was
in April of 1972 to get a 3 days notice you are going to Viet Nam, I came
back early but I was on the pier when the ship returned, it is going to be
great to see who shows up at the reunion. |

I was assigned to ComSecFlt, when "Thunder" was sent to WesPAC
they ask some of us to just ride it to the Canal Zone and we would return
to Norfolk from there. We left in the spring of '71 I think--be gone
two weeks they said. WE got back on Christmas Eve Day of '72!
It was the best of times it was the worst of times. The accident in
Turrent 2 had an effect on everyone on board. Life was different after
that. Although we were not "ships company" we made friends
and were treated as such. Thanks to "M" Division for the
bunk. Looking for Kenchef, Borrowdale, Hale, McKay, and Rosado, all
CT's. |

CA-148 was the best looking ship on the Norfolk waterfront. I had
aspired for several years in negotiating orders to CA-148, and finally
was successful. My memories today are of the close ties I made with
shipmates in S4 Division; DKCS Marc Mendoza, DK3 Joe Eugenio; DK3 Skip
Haskell, DKSN Twinkletoes Mewbourne. Todays Sailors need a taste of what
life was like in 1972. |

I started out as a "paint chipper" when I first came on board. I soon
found that there was a better life so I took the exams and became a
storekeeper. I can't remember the main storeroom I was assigned, but I do
remember it was the largest storeroom on the ship and I was responsible
for alot of the radar tubes and material. October '72 is still a very
difficult time for me to think about. I lost a lot of friends that day.
I would have been on watch in the lower ammunition room at the time of the
explosion. I still have problems with that. I moved away from Virginia
upon my release but returned in 1987 and I guess I will be here until I
pass on. I would be very pleased to get in contact with my shipmates.

I came onboard in early 71.. and left sometime in 73 when I transfered to
the Uss Fulton. But the Newport News holds a special place in my heart.
And those men who lost their lives in turret 2 will never be forgotten. I
am happy to have found this site. Was nice to read the list of
crewmembers and thier comments. I don't know if anyone remembers me.
It was a long time ago. I remember some names, but not all. But I can
still see all thier faces in my memory. Wishing the Best for all of you. |

After all these years, I couldn't believe that someone had a web-site on
the USS Newport News. It bring back memories from that time and era when
we were in the WAR in Viet Nam. I losted alot of good friends on that ship
when it blew up. I think this will help me recover my soul I lost over
their. We were operating off the coast of Haiphong Harbor holding naval
gunfire support. They say we lost that WAR, but the truth is that they
wouldn't let us win it. The policies of our leaders at that time were
sub-standard at best. I want to personnally salute all the brave men
living and died on the USS NEWPORT NEWS - CA 148 for safe gaurding our
country.

I had some good times on the NEWPORT NEWS. She was a good ship. We stopped
off in a lot of really nice places. I also remember some not so good times
aboard her. Like in Vietnam when the center gun on turret 2 exploded and
21 of our shipmates perished. We also lost a shipmate who fell overboard.
A full all out search was conducted for several hours, but he was never
found. I have some fond memories though and made a lot of friends. |

Actually I served two separate tours on the USS Newport News, I first came aboard in June of 64
and reenlisted on board in country in 68 the USN Deep Sea Diving School then to MCB 53 then MCB
74 then Class C welding @ San Diego then back aboard the News in late 71 and then came October
1, 1972 a day that will go down in infamy. I pray to God that all who survived will have God's
peace and mercy poured out upon them. I was in charge of the pipe shop during that last Viet
Nam cruise and being a first class petty officer my watch that night was roving security. I
was in T1 five minutes prior to explosion. If any more of the crew that was there wants to get
in touch with me I would appreciate it. Also if anyone can tell me how to get hold of a crew's
book for the last Nam cruise I sure would like to get one as the one that I had ordered never
arrived at my address. After leaving the News I went to FMAG at Norva. I discharged in March
of 74. I then worked in just about every shipyard in the area. This is getting kinda long so if anyone is interested any further

My first three years in the Navy was rewarding with respect to perspective
in my life. If I was not aboard the USS Newport News during this time in
my life, I am uncertain of what the outcome could have been. My only
regret was my uncertainty of what I wanted too do in the Navy. I did,
however, continue my naval career and retired as a Command Master Chief.
My rate prior to attending the Senior Enlisted Academy was Yeoman. I
enjoyed everday I was a part of U.S. Navy. My beginning aboard the USS
Newport News will always be treasured. |

gone mess cooking at the same time on that West Pac cruise.....For some
reason I was sent to OI/OL divison after mess cooking and avoided that
night in the turret. Life has been a roller coaster of ups and downs
since then. I worked at Philly Navy Yard for a little while, saw the Ship
every night, would sit there and wonder what life would have been like if
that night hadn't happened.....Enjoyed finding this site, I will be

On July 4, 1972 we were re-arming off the gun line and I saw Steve
Brumfield die. Later that evening they called away the watch in Mt. 56, I
was sight setter fuse setter during Conditioin 3 watches, and going up the
ladder I was caught by the 8 inch guns firing. I was found the next day
and spent 12 days in sick bay. After which I was taken by med evac to
Danang Field Hospital in Country. So I was not aboard when the turret
exploded on October 1, God Bless our Shipmates. |

Soviets/Warsaw Pact she always had an 'escort' tagging along - until she
put on turns. While on port visit in Oslo, an elderly Norwegian gent
mentioned that he thought NN was the biggest warship to pull in there

I am having great difficulty sending this message, but I lost my husband
Tom Soles on January 31st. He served on the Newport News from October
1971-1973. He will be buried with full military honors this Friday at
Eagle Point National Cemetery in Eagle Point, Oregon.
He always spoke warmly of the Newport News and his shipmates - he truly
loved that ship! The picture that will be displayed next to his flag
draped coffin, is one of him in his Newport News ball cap taken somewhere
off the coast of Vietnam.
I will miss my husband of 46 years. His ending came very suddenly and was
unexpected. |

days after T-2, after having to inventory and pack up the personnel
effects of our fallen brothers, I still think of them today. God bless

My brother, Jimmy Hartley, was in Nam on the NN during the October 1972
incident. He was a good friend to one of the boys who was seriously
injured from the toxic smoke inhalation. Unfortunately, Jimmy died in
February of 2002. He was always proud of his service to his country and
took great pride in his involvement in veteran's associations. We buried
him with full military honors on Valentine's Day that year. He is missed
daily by his family. If anyone remembers Jimmy I'd love to hear from you. |
