My time on the big boat was very exciting and at times, very scary.It made
me grow up faster than I had preferred. Hope to catch up with alot of my
shipmates. Feel free to E-mail me anytime. Hope a reunion of some sort is
in the works.Florida would be a great place to have it.I could possibly
find some nice things to see(ha ha!) All of my medals,pictures and awards
of those days are in my exwifes possession. She said when I grow up, I can
have them back, but she does let me travel down the road of memories every
so often.Makes me realize how young we were. After all said and down, I'd

"Galloping Gray Ghost from the East Coast" what a schock it was
in April of 1972 to get a 3 days notice you are going to Viet Nam, I came
back early but I was on the pier when the ship returned, it is going to be
great to see who shows up at the reunion. |

I was assigned to ComSecFlt, when "Thunder" was sent to WesPAC
they ask some of us to just ride it to the Canal Zone and we would return
to Norfolk from there. We left in the spring of '71 I think--be gone
two weeks they said. WE got back on Christmas Eve Day of '72!
It was the best of times it was the worst of times. The accident in
Turrent 2 had an effect on everyone on board. Life was different after
that. Although we were not "ships company" we made friends
and were treated as such. Thanks to "M" Division for the
bunk. Looking for Kenchef, Borrowdale, Hale, McKay, and Rosado, all
CT's. |

remember a friend Bergman,killed in the turrent explosion,i was on lookout
watch above the turrent with mike hammond i do believe. i remember a crew
member stepping out of a 5in mount into the veitnam waters,we never found!

I came onboard in early 71.. and left sometime in 73 when I transfered to
the Uss Fulton. But the Newport News holds a special place in my heart.
And those men who lost their lives in turret 2 will never be forgotten. I
am happy to have found this site. Was nice to read the list of
crewmembers and thier comments. I don't know if anyone remembers me.
It was a long time ago. I remember some names, but not all. But I can
still see all thier faces in my memory. Wishing the Best for all of you. |

Actually I served two separate tours on the USS Newport News, I first came aboard in June of 64
and reenlisted on board in country in 68 the USN Deep Sea Diving School then to MCB 53 then MCB
74 then Class C welding @ San Diego then back aboard the News in late 71 and then came October
1, 1972 a day that will go down in infamy. I pray to God that all who survived will have God's
peace and mercy poured out upon them. I was in charge of the pipe shop during that last Viet
Nam cruise and being a first class petty officer my watch that night was roving security. I
was in T1 five minutes prior to explosion. If any more of the crew that was there wants to get
in touch with me I would appreciate it. Also if anyone can tell me how to get hold of a crew's
book for the last Nam cruise I sure would like to get one as the one that I had ordered never
arrived at my address. After leaving the News I went to FMAG at Norva. I discharged in March
of 74. I then worked in just about every shipyard in the area. This is getting kinda long so if anyone is interested any further

Came on board the same time as R. Daley, R. Kikkert, R. Rucker, and R.
Robinson....great bunch of guys, who left us on Oct. 1st......We had all
gone mess cooking at the same time on that West Pac cruise.....For some
reason I was sent to OI/OL divison after mess cooking and avoided that
night in the turret. Life has been a roller coaster of ups and downs
since then. I worked at Philly Navy Yard for a little while, saw the Ship
every night, would sit there and wonder what life would have been like if
that night hadn't happened.....Enjoyed finding this site, I will be
contacting some of you guys that I remember... Take Care |

On July 4, 1972 we were re-arming off the gun line and I saw Steve
Brumfield die. Later that evening they called away the watch in Mt. 56, I
was sight setter fuse setter during Conditioin 3 watches, and going up the
ladder I was caught by the 8 inch guns firing. I was found the next day
and spent 12 days in sick bay. After which I was taken by med evac to
Danang Field Hospital in Country. So I was not aboard when the turret
exploded on October 1, God Bless our Shipmates. |
