Great Website! I was a gunners mate on mount 53. My mount captain was Fred
Blind. Good friends on ship were Tom Diaz, Fred Blind, Lou Sansone and
many others. Miss All and think of all of you a lot. I have been looking
for merchandise with the Newport News crest and silhouette. Lost most of
my things from Vietnam. I only have a few papers and a album of pictures
from Philippines. Would love to see more pictures! |

I volunteered for the Nam cruise and although none of us new what was in
store for us, the tragedy of Turrent 2 made us all closer as shipmates and
taught us just how precious life is. I was up for re-enlistment when the
saluting battery blew up and I decided to leave the Navy, I signed back in
in 1975 and retired from the Navy in 1991 as GMG1. I served on many ships
but thunder will always be the one I remember most. |

on and the ship underway. I am proud to have had this tour of duty and to
have worked with such a fine group of sailors. I left the Navy in 1977 and
worked as systems engineer for Rockwell for 23 years. Retired in 2000.

Where the hell have you guys been hiding?!? Despite reports to the
contrary, I'm alive and well, in Florida. Hey, any idea where that ringing
in my ears came from? Having stood at the control panel of T2's center gun
just one hour before the explosion, I've mixed emotions about just how
much I want to remember. (Never felt right about standing a watch in any
turret other than T1 !!) But, I'd love to hear from anyone else who served
on that teak-decked piece of pig-iron. She truly was Regina Marls, Queen
of the Sea. A T1 Gun Captain, on that very dark October night. |

i had transfered to the newport news 1 day befor it left on it last
viatnam cruse. i worked in the machine shop . my battle station was the
aft topside station. when the foward blu up i was the # 1 hose tender of
the second team that went in side the damaged turrel while is was still on
fire and helped put out the turrel fire. i always looked at the newport
new as a cadalic of ships and was the best of the 5 ships i was station on
i hope to here from other crew members. thank you richard a jensen mr3 |

I came aboard on April 12th, 1972, the day before we left for Viet Nam.
Many, many memories. My 18th birthday on the gunline. Becoming
best friends with those from all over the country and from all walks of
life. Most notably Bob Kikkert who some of you may remember as being
the last sailor found on the lower projectile deck of Turrent 2 on October
1st. I will never forget sitting on top of Turrent 3 that night
wondering with the rest of my shipmates what had happened. I
remember telling them, "Don't worry, Kikkert will tell us when he
gets here", as Turrent 3 was his GQ station as well. I will
also never forget the chilling sounds of the Bos'n mate of the watch
calling, "SN Kikkert, Lay to the Bridge!" I was one of
only four Burial Escorts from our ship and escorted Bob back to his family
and final resting place in Gary, Indiana. I became a man that year
and the people I met and experiences I shared have influenced me and
stayed with me every day of my life. I counted every day I served
and couldn't wait to get out to get on with my life. As I look back
I realize just how much my life was shaped by those short years. I
loved riding my Harley up and down the pier. There was many a
morning that I woke up in my rack happy to realize that I made it back to
the ship alive. I was even happier to go topside and look down at
the end of the pier to see that my faithful Harley made it back with me as
well.
I still have many photos and it was fun to scoll through the names and
remember many of you. Please feel free to contact me if you remember
me as well. Fair winds and following seas to you all.

Many great memories; mainly NoEurope cruises in '73 & '74; Best foursome
in OI Division were the four L's (Lane, Leech, Lewis and Loveless) Hope
all is well with all the old shipmates and keep the memories alive by
staying in touch! Last saw NN148 in Philly shipyard after decomm; sad to
hear she was scrapped: after leaving I served on USS Belknap and
survived collision with USS JFK and attending memorial in Norfolk this
April 2003; left active in 4/76 and have many great memories of all the
great times and crewmembers I served with; God Bless and all take care |

I am in shock that this website exist...this is awsome...I tried to take
my kids to visit the ship but of course I found out too late that it had
been turned into razor blades...but this site allows for the memory to
live on...PLUS I now know where I can get ships store "stuff"
AND get in contact with my mates from years Past like Mr. Clifford T. and
all the other "Docs" from the wild "H" division.
