Great ship and great tour of duty! So many great experiences and
memories....had my appendix's taken out on ship during Cuban Blockade, and
got to signal the Russian ships to pull back the missle covers for
inspection. All of the great ports-Copenhagen, Nice (remember the topless
beaches),Norway,Athens,Trinadad,Kiel,the trip thur Gibraltar full speed to
Agadair,Morocco earthquake. I got to go up in the helicopter and view
terrible damage. It was a life experience that was just what a 18 year old
needed to prepare for the future. Would not have traded my tour for a
college experience!

My father, Franklin Eugene
Dean, Jr, my father, just passed away. He served on the USS Newport News
in the early 1960s as radioman. He is survived by his loving wife of
thirty-five years, Kathleen, and two sons
and a daughter. Serving aboard the Newport News was one of the
accomplishments in life that my father was most proud of. He habitually
wore a USS Newport News hat with great pride.

My USNR-R Division won first place in Naval Reserve Competition so I was
selected to "join" the NN Off Leghorn, Italy in june of 1960.
Was on board for only one month then flew home. Had neen aboard DE's
and DD's so the NN was huge to me when I first saw it in the harbor from
the whale boat bringing us alongside. The signal crew were great and
accepted me as a shipmate. Great experience. I remember the size of the
ship, the band and the marines aboard who "guarded" our
two-star-RA Galitin(not sure of spelling of his name) Favorite story of
the NN- When sailing past the Rock of Gibralter the Limey signalman atop
the Rock signaled AA (What Ship) with flashing light...Our Captain told
the signalman to answer....What Rock? |

the NN was a big show boat always had to sparkle for every cruise and most
of us cleaned it with a tooth brush, any one remember the earth quack at
agadir morocco 1960? nn steamed full speed for several days to the aid of
thousands by the time we arrived the stinch was bad news, can't remember
any of the names of crew getting old and ugly. Did anyone ever get
tricked with the bucket of steam, or sky hook for air mail? if you did you
remember me, I enjoyed the years on the nn and the many places we went
wish I could return to most of the ports now north atlantic, med,

Was home on leave when Thunder left N.O.B. for '62 Cuban crisis. Beat it
back to Norfolk and caught a RDS out of Newport, R.I. Caught up with
Thunder patrolling somewhere around The Straits of Florida or Nicolas
Channel.
I spent the remainder of the crisis manning an opened tub twin 3" AA
gun mount that was located mid-ship on the starboard side. This is where I
lived the next several days, rain or shine. In the wee hours of one
morning we took a direct hit during a mock attack from a low flying patrol
plane. Combat Control sent word down that we were toasted. However a
short time later we were rewarded with breakfast in bed, the usual,
horse cock sandwiches in a brown paper bag with luke warm coffee.
Those were the days when we were sailors so young and Castro's WMD program
became history. We couldn't tolerate those things around near our back
door. |

still remember the names of many of the corpsman all the Chief and the
officer who were in Medical for all the years I was onboard. I stayed in
an did 25 years and retired after making LCDR Medical Service Corps. I
am now a Southern Baptist Minister. God Bless all members listed here
