Some of the best years of my life. When I tell my friends and family sea stories of when I served, they can hardly believe the adventures we had. I made three N. Atlantic crossings. I am
proud to say that as the "doc" I was one of the last to serve on USS Newport News through the decommissioning at St Helena's piers.

My memories of Newport News (CA148)are filled with fondness and sadness. I loved this ship, she kept me on my toes. My duty station was on the fantail and hanger deck. My shipmates were a swell group of guys. My division officer was a really nice guy for an officer. It was great watching him paint the bluenose on the ship. The Newport News was a proud ship, I was proud to have been her crew.

I wanted to add, that I'm presently on Active Duty Orders in Dam Neck, Virginia and working on my 16th year in the Naval Reserves.  I did make DM1 in the Naval Reserves in 2002 and was converted to PH1 a few months later.  I'm just looking to get to the end and retire.  Wish I had gotten in sooner to be finished already.  I'm a really old dog and also wish, i had gotten on the Newport News sooner to have been with the crew in Vietnam as most of my generation has.  I must be one of the last left from the Vietnam era.

am not sure of the dates but, Maybe one of the shipmates can help me.  I got on the New Port News when it left the east coast and came to San Diego to refuel and was on the way to Viet Nam. I stayed on board till it left Viet Nam and when she was being decommissioned in Norfolk Va. My 4 years was up and I got an early out when she went to Pa. I am glad I found this sight. I remember a few names and I will be emailing them .

I was lucky enough to travel with him during his military years.  Somewhere we obtained a photo of the ship and its been hanging in my hallway for many years.  I understand the men who served on the Newport News have a lot of fond memories but there are also a lot of memories in the hearts of the wives.  It never quite gets out of your blood.

It was an honor to serve aboard the N.N. She was tough right down to her last cruise. Even through the testing of her ability in speed. I can remember her and her excellent crew withstanding 2 or 3 engine fires as she topped at (I think) 30 knots. When dawn approached we were pulling into Norfolk. She brought me home safe for the last time. I will always remember her guns and wooden decks and also the H/division "docs".

I was just out of A school and NN was what I thought a warship should look like. I worked with Joe Petrelli and lots of others in R division, and had mad some friends in A gang as well. I was in Richmond VA last winter and went down to Norfolk, man it has really changed. Ocean View is not the same as I remember. After decommissioning, I went to a gator freighter, the USS Raleigh, LPD1. I can tell you it was not the same. I still have some NN ships bulletins and a couple of uniform rockers. A couple of years back I gave a deposition for a member of E division who had contracted mesothelioma and helped his family get some money before he passed. Any former members of R division who remember me, send me an email or give me a shout (505)217-5384, I'd really like to hear from Petrelli.

Hot dang!  Just fiddling around and found the NN website.  Sure started bringing back old memories. God that was a long time ago, but some memories seem like yesterday.  I wonder where everybody is now and what they're doing.  Life has been very good to me and I've truly been blessed.  I'm surprised that we never ran aground or blew up based on the amount of recreational inhalants that were used.  Anybody know about Haddad, Santos,Charlie Perkins, Professor, Guggenbiller or any of the other snipes.  Would love to hear from you.

Some of the best times of my life were on the Newport News. Bonne and I have 3 children and 1 grandson. Our daughter Judy lives in Iowa with her husband and son Travis (great name don't you think?) They are moving to Thailand in June. Her husband LeDon has a job running a company over there. Judy met her husband while in the Air Force. Bo (our middle child) was in the Army for 4 years and now going to school full time and in the National Guard. Our youngest son Joe Jr., is in the NAVY and will be stationed on the USS NIMITZ, San Diego, CA on April 25th. Time sure does fly.  We would like to here from anyone from "A" gang at that time frame.

I have always considered it an honor and a privilege to served aboard the USS Newport News CA 148.  I had so much fun I’m still enjoying it today. Most of all I remember having family.  Also, I remember our captain saying every morning: “Men Work Hard and Play Hard.” Which is something we did best.  Although I may not remember everybody from those great days, my heart holds the memories of my brothers close.

I want to hear from anyone who was on the ship during that time. I love working in Gun Mount51, I have a lot of pictures from the ship. May God, Bless all of you. Hi guys! it sure was great finding this site! I have had a wonderful and fulfilling life since being discharged, but I always felt incomplete, then I found the NN site and I felt like I got part of my life back. When I reported on board, I had already been in the navy for two years, but I feel that The ship was were I grew up. If anyone looks at my time on board and wonders how I left the ship in 11/75, it is because after decommissioning, I was part of a 25 man skeleton crew. What a sensation that was, 1 of 25 where once a thousand men once went about there work. part of those duties was to seal off each compartment and run ductwork from each compartment to four huge de-humidifying machines, this was to keep the ship's interior from rusting. My wildest dreams told me that there was big plans for the old 148. My heart felt like it was ripped out when I found out the ship's final fate, but with a site like this and everyone who has signed up and visited this site the Newport News will live on. I worked in the machine shop for Leon Fair, your condolences are appreciated. I'm looking to hear from anyone. It would be great to hear from a plank owner up to the last guy that was on the skeleton crew with me. I'm especially looking for Henry Montesano, Sam Tungrian, from Bloomfield and Nutley NJ, Frank Ward or Juan Vera from NYC, Steve Bailey from St. Louis, Chuck Newman e-mail me back. Ron Berg c'mon Ron, let's hear from you! At the time of this posting, I have five grandchildren, but my wife will cut me some slack if some of the old gang wants to kick around the old days for a while. I married a terrific gal, only because I asked God for one and he was gracious enough to honor my request. Hey, keep those cards and letters coming in, and, remember Just because I work for the Post Office doesn't mean I'm a DPW!!! p.s. Any of my buds without an e-mail, my # is 651-322-7740
