"Is there a USS Newport News Model Kit available?"

Battle Connection War Ships

There is a “Starter Kit” you can get if you are interested in a 5 Foot (1:144 Scale) version of the model. This kit is only a Fiberglass Hull, Resin Main and Secondary turrets (5” and 8” Turrets), and Ship’s Plans.  To see more information, go to http://battlersconnection.com/html/desmoines.html . Now this group sells / Builds models that does real combat. So these model kits have no details. You have to provide (make or buy) all the detail  for the ship.

Yankee Model Works,  1/350 Resin Kit.

This kit depicts USS Salem CA-139 and sisters, USS Des Moines CA134 and USS Newport News CA148, in their mid 1950s configuration. The model scale-out to 24.5 inches long. The kit contains resin cast parts, White Metals parts, Photetched parts, and a special set of decals that enables you to build this kit as any one of the ships in this class. The kit also includes a plan and profile drawing in 1/350th scale and a complete instruction booklet. This kit was originally produced by "Classic War Ships" and is now being produced by "Yankee Model Works". This model is available in some local model and craft shops, or it can be ordered off the internet.

Where Can I buy the Kit?

First, you need to know what to ask for. The Full Description of the model is
"Resin 1/350 Scale, USS Salem CA-139 Des Moines Class CA (1955), Produced by Yankee Model Works,

You can find this kit in your Local Hobby Stores that stock a decent selection of Ship Models. If your favorite hobby store does not stock it, they can order if for you.  (Please support your Local Hobby Stores. The internet is killing them and they need your support to stay open!)  The normal price in a hobby store is somewhere between $250 to $285

Or, you can order the Kit off the Internet.
Quick, easy and cheaper, (which is probably why we are loosing so many of our local hobby stores!)

Order from this model from Trident Hobbies  http://www.tridenthobbies.com/.
Ask for Kit number YKM35124 "Resin 1/350 Scale, USS Salem CA-139"

 Trident Hobbies Price: $227.99
(The above information is verified by a couple of emails from Trident Hobbies on in January 2007. They even had some in stock ready to ship!)

 US Navy Heavy Cruiser
Salem CA-139
Kit #CWK06  Price $260.00

In the year 2004, Pacific Front was selling this model kit made by "Classic War Ships (Now Yankee Model Works)".   According to their web site (as of 1/20/07) they still offer this model but this has not yet been confirmed. On 01/20/2007 I sent them an email asking them to verify  have that they still offer the model, but I have not yet received a reply as of today, a week later.  I am not sure if they are still active.
