What are these work parties all about?

The USS Newport News museum and memorial foundation Has built a museum and memorial to the USS Newport News. The museum/memorial is a place of honor for a great ship and the patriotic men that served on her.

The USS Salem, sister ship to USS Newport News is hosting the museum in berthing compartment b308l on board the Salem, at the U.S. Navy Shipbuilding Museum, in Quincy Ma. This space has been set-aside for the crew of the Newport News to design our display as we wish. On display is a variety of original memorabilia that chronicles the legacy of the ship and her crew throughout her entire history. Turret 2 has been set up as a memorial to our fallen shipmates from the 1972 explosion.

We have completed the audio/visual section, which will display home movies and news footage about the ship. We are now in the process of finishing the clean up and repair to turret 2.  This is a special occasion for our boatswains and gunner's mates to get back in to the turret and prepare it for it's ultimate goal - a memorial to our fallen comrades.

The focus is now on the area around turret 2 including Mount 1 and some of the 3 inch. This is all designed to enhance T2 as a memorial to our fallen shipmates.

USS Newport News museum and memorial foundation directors include Al Siegel, John Noll, Bob Freeman, Mike Lanier, John Dowell, Jim Peden, Norm Swanson, Ron Prisco and Chuck Zendner with the time and financial support of numerous USS Newport News shipmates.
