How_find_usCuriosity search CommentsI served aboard the News from June 1964 through April 1966 as an MU2. We were CINCLANT's band under the command of ADM Kleber S. Masterson.
Additionally, the band members were cross trained as AAW plotters and manned flag plot during NATO and North Atlantic exercises.
She was one of the truly great ships in the US Navy's arsenal and it was my good fortune to have served aboard her.

How_find_usJust learned of our grade school class mate passed away on your ship. CommentsFirst, let me thank the US Service people who go out and put their life on the line for us. God Bless you
all.
A member of our grade school class was a member of your ship's crew. I did not learn until a recent grade school 40th reunion from 8th grade about the fate of our classmate Joseph Grisofi.
I felt compelled to write a comment on Joe.
Who knew that this quiet boy who was a part of our class would grow up to be a TRUE AMERICAN HERO.
My heart is heavy to know this fine young man did not have the chance to reach all his dreams which I am sure were many. You never know who is capable of making a difference in the world!!!
May Joe rest in peace.
May the bravery of our Service People always be remembered with the greatest of respect.
God Bless America.
Thanks, Joe!!!

How_find_usA vehicle in Austin, TX had a display on the side CommentsI was in traffic in Austin, TX and I looked to my left and saw an SUV with the name of the Newport News and was dumb struck. I was the Air Controlman on the USS New Orleans who controled the aircraft that evacuated the injured and dead off of your ship the day of the explosion. If I remeber correctly it took about 4 hours and numerous trips to complete the task. It was a very sad day for the Navy and all involved. My wife who was with me had no idea of my invovlement or the details but could tell I was deeply moved by the memory.

How_find_usOn-line CommentsI wish to express the deep sorrow, for both myself, family and that of my late husband Dr.Frederick Richardson at the loss of our dear friend Rear-Admiral Sheldon Kinney, I am originally from Australia, we met while aboard our boat "The Snow Goose" which was slotted between the Australian's and the U.S.A. American's Cup race at Newport R.I. 1983, a tap tap permission to come aboard was heard from below, it was Sheldon, ( who headed up The America's Cup syndicate for The New York Yacht Club) since that time we became firm friends, Australia won the Cup that year, Sheldon graciously poured champagne over me ( the Aussie) he loved our Freedom 40" "The Snow Goose" with my husband and other Colleagues from Yale, they sailed her to Sheldon and Lee's Island off Camden Maine for the Summer, we had to drive 5 hours from CT. to sail on weekends, one year I had my Uncle Wing Commander Robert Henry Maxwell Gibbes and his wife over from Australia ( perhaps Australia's most decorated Aviator) it was fascinating to hear the Rear-Admiral and The Wing Commander swapping WW11 stories, quite an event as we sailed through the Maine fog.
My husband had just launched the first cochlear implant program at Yale for people with deafness, Sheldon had lost some hearing from "shell shock" he was the first recipient of this new device at Yale and thrilled, so many memories for me, and my children of a wonderful natural man, I had no idea of his background, he was a modest person a true friend to us all, stayed at our house in CT. en-route from Annapolis to our boat in Newport for week-ends
Virginia Gibbes Richardson,
for my family, Wendy and Sarah, and late husband Frederick.
