I think that my "Sea stories" and Pride probably was a contributing factor in my son signing up for a 6 year hitch last Aug.

but at least she is serving a purpose of sorts as an artificial reef in West

Comments: Just one comment. My name is Debby Robertson and I
am proud to say that I am the daughter of a shipmate of yours, the founder of
the USS Newport News Association. His name was Franklin Delano Ragland, better
known has Rags. My comment to all of you who know my Dad is this: His last
request was that he have with him the following items: 1. His tall Bud, which he
did, I opened it and put it to his lips moments before his death. 2. His picture
of my mother. 3. His last pack of pall mall smokes with his Newport News
lighter. 4. His Newport News hat on his head. These requests were all granted
with in a few minutes before his depart from this earth to join my mother on New
Years Eve. That was his final request that was met by God himself. Dad passed
away 4 minutes before the hour of Midnight to be with my mother on the dawning
of the new year. To all of you that knew my father well you will relize that
this was the way he wanted it to end. Please have a toast to him at the next
reunion and remember that he was the one who helped make the Newport News
Reunion what it was and never will be again!! Sincerely, Debby Robertson

Comments: I remember visiting the USS NEWPORT NEWS back in 1963
while attending OCS under what was called ROC II program at Newport, RI. I
distinctly recall one Saturday afternoon wandering over to the Destroyer Piers
where the ship was moored; saluting the national ensign and OOD & requesting
permission to come aboard to tour the ship. Permission was granted and we set
off to tour the ship for the next few hours. It was quite impressive as is this
website. That Monday morning, the ship was underway and presented quite a site
rounding Coddington Point and heading out to sea...and of course I was the CO.
Four years later found me assigned to a Seabee battalion in SE Asia. At least
they called it "sea duty" but not the kind I anticipated. Great site.
