Comments:   Was excited to fine a web site about the N,N Have enjoyed reading about her, but not finding much about the years 54- 56. Have found some people I knew aboard her. She was a beauty & I enjoyed my tenure , The people , the ports , liberty (like a college education in history), etc. Sorry to hear that she was finally scrapped . But that is life. The memories live on!!!!!!!!!

Comments:   For an article in Navy Times newspaper, I am trying to find history of the details of the Bofors 40-mm. cannon. I would especially like to find someone who can speak about the Bofors from personal experience. This is very urgent, so I need to hear from you immediately. Can you offer suggestions for a source of information on the gun? Don't hesitate. Ring me at (703) 264-8950 now. P. S. My latest book is "AIR FORCE ONE," an inside look at President Bush's aircraft and at the history of presidential air travel. Best wishes Bob Dorr Robert F. Comments:   Your web page is great. I was just browsing to see if I could find a Ship's picture for a friend of mine (David Acosta) who served on the NN from about '65 thru '67. I served on the USS Bridget DE1024, WESPAC cruise in 1966 and was recently able to get a ship's picture from a shipmate I found on the net. These are things we just don't think about while we're on board and now the NN like the Bridget are scrapped. I wish my ship had such a web page. Keep up the good work.

Comments:   My husband, Robert, proudly served on the USS NN, during the Korean War. This was long before we met. I always enjoyed listening to his stories about the ship and his shipmates. Bob died Dec. 4, 1999 (12/4 is the Feast of St. Barbara, patron saint of sailors) and buried on Dec.7 (Pearl Harbor Day) - how appropriate: His hitch in the Navy was a very special time in his life. This is a wonderful website. Thank you all for your service to the US as we honor our Vets on Veterans' Day! Sincerely, Mollie

Comments:   Thanks guys for the site. My dad (Warren L. Hogan) died from the '72 accident, however, it took him 6 painful years to go. The concussion from the explosion caused his Kidneys to literally be absorbed by his body and he was on dialysis until he died 6 years later. I met a Navy Captain a few years back at Yokota Air Force Base while doing some work and he said he was on the search and recovery ship that came out in '72. He told me that the dead were the lucky ones from that accident. He did his best to fill in some of the gaps in the story I had. I know that my dad had some great times and some great friends on the Newport News. Please feel free to contact me if you have any good stories to pass along. I was in 5th grade when he left and didn't get to here much. Thank you all for putting together this site.

Comments:   I served in Vietnam 1970-71 onboard HMAS Perth (Gunpowder) and must admit I was shocked at the news of the explosion on NN shortly after we were relieved by HMAS Brisbane. The time on the line for a 19 year old boy was fantastic and it didn't take long to become a man. I too was injured whilst on the line but my injury is insignificant when it comes to the crew of the NN. The site is a credit to you all and ensures that men who suffered hardships or gave their all in times of conflict are never forgotten. God Bless you All

Comments:   From 5/74 to 6/75 I'd appreciate any information as to the whereabouts or email addresses of the following shipmates from my time: Kevin Louchran (or Loughlin), an SA from one of the deck divisions (not 3rd), who left the Navy in 1974 (late summer, I think, prior to the NATO cruise). I think he was from St. Louis, or somewhere in Missouri; Ensign Callahan, 3rd Division, from a close suburb of Philadelphia (I think Oreland); and a PO3 (I think OS) whom I met while mess cooking, and whose name I regretfully can't recall. He was dark-complexioned and had dark hair (possibly of Italian heritage), and I believe wore a mustache. If memory serves, he spoke with a NYC accent. He was an expert on The War of the Roses. (How many of them could there have been among enlisted squids?!) I just wanted to say hello and/or express gratitude. Finally, may God bless Captain Briner, one of the kindest men ever to command a ship! Good fortune and long life to you, sir.

Comments:   Enjoyed your site.. I served on the USS Hanson DD-832 while participating in operation line backer in which the Newport News, Providence, Oklahoma City, Buchanan and Hanson were involved. The Newport News was quite impressive at Quang Tri. I served as an ETN2 at that time and was listening in on radio calls for Newport News to fire on enemy targets. "Thunder, Thunder" was the appropriate call sign as she made the most noise (8" guns) at Quang Tri. We had but 5" and others (cruisers) 6". Quite a ship. I took two close up 35mm color pictures of her after the big push at Quang Tri one morning while she was stretching her guns. I could scan the two photos and send (email) if you wish (summer 1972, S. of Quan Tri). ETN2 USS Hanson DD-832

We called gunfire in Morse code for the Newport News, and they were right on after two corrections with their eight inchers. the French officer next to me couldn't believe how accurate the gunners were on the NN. It was an awesome sight to watch her come in. Ever sense then I have always admired the heavy gun ships of the Navy. Some of the best times of my life was on the NN. I  went through the decommissioning in 1975, it hurt to see her die. The last I seen her was in the Philadelphia shipyards. Dennis Pruett and I served together for three years, I ended up marrying his sister in 1976, and been together ever since. Now that's what the Newport News done for me.

Comments:   I was a BM3 aboard the USS Windham County LST 1170 on 1Oct72. We had steamed in company with NN and several other ships a few days before the explosion. We were probably 5 miles away from NN when the accident occurred and heard the details of the incident the next morning. We were stunned and deeply saddened when we learned what happened. Over the years I have often thought of that incident and told my 2 sons about 20 brave men who gave their life for their country. I will never forget those men even though I never had the honor to meet them. Thank you for this very touching tribute to a great ship and crew.
Sincerely, Greg Patras Orland Park, IL

Comments:   Back in 1957 I was ordered aboard the USS NORTHAMPTON. The NEWPORT NEWS was tied up across the pier from NORTHAMPTON and I always thought what a beautiful ship the NN was. We ended up going on a cruise in the North Atlantic when Eisenhower went to France to meet with with the Russian Premier. There was nothing prettier than watching the NN cruising at sea. My heartfelt sentiments go out to the crew members who died in the gun turret. I did not know about this until I read it at this web site. Thanks Denis Heurtevant -

This is a wonderful/ informative website and every time I view it, it takes be back in time to those wonderful days of before. It goes without saying finding former shipmates/friends thus affording the opportunity to contact them after soooo many years is fantastic to say the least. I wish there were a way where all those serving on the NN could find out about this site opposed to finding it by chance as I did. It is unfortunate that our home away from home was scrapped after serving our country proudly for so many years. Fortunately no one can take from us our memories, I for one shall treasure mine until time is no more. I salute you my one time home and all those that sailed upon her throughout time.

Neat site was an old Tin Can sailor and love anything Nautical but mostly Navy. Was a little disappointed there weren't any pictures of the turrets and mounts up close and personal. Big gun ships fascinated me in my Navy days and when they went the way of the dinosaur I was devastated to say the least. It wasn't the same Navy I knew when the guns went, just wasn't fair or Naval. I'm glad I had the pleasure of serving with the last of the big gun cruisers in the 50's , they were a sight to move the "unbelievers" when under way or sitting in port. They were truly "Great" ships!!

Comments:   I was serving aboard U.S.S. Shelton (DD 790). On October 1st of 1972, we were on rest station about 1000 yards from Newport News. My gun crew and I were sleeping under Mt.1 when we heard the explosion from Newport News. Since there were migs in the area we thought she took a hit from one of them. We found out later this had been an internal explosion. At this time on the cruise we were getting ammunition that was made in 1942, 45 for our 5 in. guns. The story was that there wasn't any new ammunition to be had because of all the firing that was being done. So they went into stockpiles that they had left over from World War II. Also the powder cans were made of brass not the alloy mixes that we were used to. I've always wondered if your ship also got this old ammunition.

We left Vietnam in December 1972 and our ship alone fired over 15,000 rounds. I believe that not enough has been said about what the cruisers and destroyers did on the gunline in both North and South Vietnam.

I'm trying to retrieve my ship's logs from that time to try to piece together what was done on that cruise. There is a picture in my cruise book of Newport News alongside the pier at Subic Bay. I would like to get it to you. If you are interested, please let me know exactly where to send it. Welcome home. Victor J. Rivera (GMG-2) U.S. Navy

It was a grim reality of what being in "harms way" was all about. I was very envious of the "News" with her 8" guns and was confident sailing with her into North Vietnamese waters when we made our treks up there. I've enjoyed this site and have, for a moment, relived my time in Vietnam.
