To all USS Newport News (CA-148) shipmates, and friends of the Newport News.

The museum association needs to ask you for contributions.

This is the first time we have had to go to you in over three years, but it is now time to ask for your financial help for the USS Newport News Museume.

It costs money to sponsor the work parties and to expand and maintain the Museum display and spaces aboard the USS Salem such as the T-2 display, the museum rooms, and the chief of staff cabin. All donations are completely, tax free and no donation is too small. All donations of time and money are appreciated regardless of size.

Our financial statement is available for all to look at on the museum website http://www.uss-newport-news.com/salem/financial.html . After the expenses for the work party last week are posted the balance will be a little under $2000.00.

Please send all donations to:

USS Newport News Museum and Memorial Foundation,
15233 Ventura Blvd. 900,
Sherman Oaks, California 91403.

Thank you for your generosity,

Fair winds and following seas,
USS Newport News Museum & Memorial Foundation

USS Newport News
Carl Cole's Note Cards

A few months ago, Carl Cole has made an offer to those shipmates on the "USS Newport News Free Speech email list" to make some "USS Newport News Note Cards" and now is offering it to the rest of the USS NN Shipmates. Those of us who have already order a few boxes of these Note Cards really enjoy them. For such a small cost, they are great for assorted purposes.

This is not a "Money Making Project" for Carl, more of a service to the USS NN Shipmates. Carl's is charging enough to cover his cost of supplies and covers some of his time involved with this project.

The note cards are top-fold, blank on the inside,  5 1/2" x 4 1/4 " on 65 lb. card stock, and are packaged 10 note cards with 10 envelopes in a clear plastic box. The cost of each box is $10.00.

Shipping -     $3.85 Priority Mail.
The USPS Priority Mail rate of $3.85 for up to one pound to any zone in the US should be adequate for up to 3 boxes of note cards and a large number of prints.

If you'd like something, just send me your mailing address, what you want, and payment to:

Carl W. Cole
2221 Maxcy St.
Charleston, SC 29412-2714

How to get your Service Records.

The National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) has provided the following website for veterans to gain access to their DD-214s online: vetrecs.archives.gov/

This may be particularly helpful when a veteran needs a copy of his DD-214 for employment purposes. NPRC is working to make it easier for veterans with computers and Internet access to obtain copies of documents from their military files. Military veterans and the next of kin of deceased former military members may now use a new online military personnel records system to request documents.

Other individuals with a need for documents must still complete the Standard Form 180, which can be downloaded from the online web site. Because the requester will be asked to supply all information essential for NPRC to process the request, delays that normally occur when NPRC has to ask veterans for additional information will be minimized. The new web-based application was designed to provide better service on these requests by eliminating the records center's mailroom processing time.

Please pass this information on to former military personnel you may know and their dependents.
