USS NN Work Party
April 27 to April 30, 2006.

From   Al Siegel ETR2
            OE Division 67-70
             Museum Workparty Coordinator

Hey everyone:

It has been quite a while since we have had a real workparty, filled with good times and sea stories.

Well – good times are about to happen once more.

The Newport News Workparty on the USS Salem is slated for April 27 to April 30, 2006.

We really do have much to do – particularly dealing with our ships models. Yes – I said models. You know – plural!!

We have a terrific one down in the museum today that requires a case, and we have our eyes on the brass model of the ship in San Diego. That project is moving forward under the auspices of former shipmate Mike Scott. If all goes well, we might have that model in the museum by April, which would then utilize our resources to bring it below decks and get it properly displayed.

Sure – you can bunk on the Salem, I just need to let Bill Anderson know who will be coming. Bring your families, friends, girlfriends or wives (or both). Lets make this a grand time. I will contact a couple of places to see what kind of rates we can work out – not just the Marriott

Now don’t say you haven’t had enough notice – you just got 6 months. Get a pen and mark it in your calendar.

And tell your fellow shipmates about this just in case they don’t have a computer.

More later.

“If I order stuff from the ship’s store, will I get it before Christmas??”

The answer is YES!!, But you have to be quick and get your order in the mail now. Vicky and Art are shipping out all orders they received between now and Dec 20th within 2 days after they receive your order. So, depending on how long mail takes to get to you from Massachusetts to your city will determine the delivery date?

Sorry, we are not set up to accept credit card orders, so get your order into the US Mail this week!

To go to our web ships store web site, and to see new items added http://www.uss-newport-news.com/store/

From that page, click on Merchandise Display to see all of our merchandise.

Then click on Order Form Print-out to Print out the order form and send it to the ship's store. Follow ordering instructions on the last page of the order form.

New!! Just added to the ship's store last week.

For years, our shipmates have asked for "Ship's Patches".

We have talked about adding the patch to the ships store for a long time but never could find a vendor who could offer them at an affordable price without having to buy thousands of the patches. We have found a vendor that would make a small enough quantity that we didn't have to spend a fortune on the first order.

You can get your USS NEWPORT NEWS PATCH from our ship's store

4 inch cloth patch. Replica of the USS Newport News's ship patch we  wore when we were station on the ship.

Price Each: $10.00
Item # 10

USS Newport News  Museum
New 7-1/2 foot museum quality model

Most shipmates are aware that a 7-1/2 foot museum quality model has been under construction for 3 years, and is now ready for launching. Jeff Leidner has replicated the 1958 NN Drawings and Specifications to produce what will likely be the definitive model of the Newport News prior to her retrofit in '62.

In addition to the extraordinary quality of the model, a unique aspect is that parts of the model are made from the original decking of the USS Newport News. In 1993, the USS Newport News was sold to a scrapped yard company in New Orleans, LA. Mike Lanier (HM2 - 08/67 to 08/69) went to New Orleans and purchased numerous items off the ship before the scrap company took her apart, including pieces of teak wood from the Deck.
A supply of this decking was given to Jeff to be used to construct the model. The decking you see on this model is in fact pieced of decking from the USS Newport News!

Jeff Leidner delivered the model to our museum on the USS Salem in Quincy MA. on October the 8th.

The model has a custom-built case for transport, which is also suitable for storage until we decide on a display case in the museum for it.

The official "unveiling" of the model will be in Charleston at Reunion 2007, for despite it's size, it is portable for taking to reunions.
