USS Newport News Reunion

USS Newport News 2005 Reunion a BIG Success!!!

From the emails I have been receiving, it looks like the 2005 Reunion was a BIG success and everyone enjoyed the being together again.

Next Reunion
Tony Gallagher is the "Chairman of the 2007 Reunion Committee” and we will be holding the 2007 reunion at Charleston, South Carolina.

The support and enthusiasm for Charleston among the attendees was strong and virtually unanimous. Charleston has a rich naval heritage, several preserved warships, and a rich Civil War heritage as well. There are ample activities in the area to suit virtually every shipmate's extracurricular taste.

For anyone wanting to help Tony put together the reunion, contact him at

USS NN Work Party
September 15, 16, 17 and 18

From   Al Siegel ETR2
            OE Division 67-70
             Museum Workparty Coordinator

SEPTEMBER 2005 WORKPARTY

Attention all Newport News shipmates, their family and friends. The Museum Foundation will be holding a shipboard workparty on board the USS Salem, Thursday to Sunday, September 15, 16, 17 and 18.

This workparty is particularly important because it will include squaring away the museum and installation of a 7 foot ship’s model. The model maker has done a fabulous job, including using actual teak wood from the Newport News for the decks. We will need to wire lights, paint the deck, repair and install carpeting etc.

We also have to cleanup, paint and secure 5” mount 51, and do touch up work in Turret 2. There will be other projects requested by our Salem friends that we will need to attend to.

In addition we are adding a new display to the museum and will be calling it Workparty Crewmembers. The display will be located on the starboard bulkhead, just forward of the 2nd fleet exhibit, and will contain pictures from all 14 workparties that have been held on the USS Salem. That being said, I need your help. If you, your family and/or friends have participated in any of our workparties, then I would like pictures of it. Don’t send me a bunch, just pick the best ones of you. The photos MUST HAVE the following information: Names of all people involved, date, your rank, division and years aboard Newport News. The Museum Directors will select as
many pictures as possible for the display so as many of you as possible get the recognition you so rightfully deserve. Please email me the pictures or send them to:

Newport News Museum
15233 Ventura Blvd, 900
Sherma
n Oaks, CA 91403

Remember, you can sleep on board ship without charge – you just need to bring your own bedding and toiletries. The Museum Foundation will provide supplies, lunch and dinner. If you want to stay at a hotel, we will do out best to secure the best rates available. There is a harbor shuttle that goes from Logan airport right to the ship.

So, bring your spouses, your kids, grandkids, cousins, friends etc. Everyone is welcome – we are the Newport News family, and it is fun for all!

If you have any questions,
or call me at 818 451-9158.

So mark your calendars, get your dungarees ready and join the fun!

Have a great summer.

USS NN Memorial
Video and Reunion Photos

On June 25, 2005, a ceremony was conducted aboard the USS Salem honoring those Shipmates who have passed away during or after their duty on NN.

A 16 Meg, 11 Minute video clip of this ceremony can be seen at:
http://home.att.net/~dgoad5/nndvd1.html

Since we had no official photographer at the reunion, those who took photos of any of the reunion happenings are requested (If Possible) to snail mail a copy of their photos on CD to Bill Pendleton. Photo file size should not be reduced before placing the photos on CD. Bill will consolidate these photos on one master reunion CD. We hope to make copies of this reunion CD available at the Ship's Store for a fee with any profit going to the Museum fund. Bill's snail mail address is:

Bill Pendleton
216 97th ST.
