Web site changes.
Some of our USS NN
Webmasters have been very busy over last few months updating our
web pages. I want to let all of you know about what has changed.
USS
Newport News Memorial page.
http://www.uss-newport-news.com/memorial/nn_memor.htm
John Dowell has added 2
Memorial pages to our web site for,,,
-
Terry McGee who fell
overboard on March 12, 1960
-
Joe Blazano, who died
from an accident on board the ship on Dec 19th, 1953.
Each memorial page on our
web site represents a lot of research for that crewmember. Below
is an example of what it takes to research 30 year old history to
collect the information needed to set up a Memorial page.
[From Williams JL. ETR2 OE Division 1959-62]
Now that Terry has been added to the Memorial Page, I'd like to
say it was a real team effort, taking numerous letters, E-mails,
phone calls, and messages.
-
Thanks to Bob Jones who first Identified Terry,
back in 2003, after I wrote my original story about the loss.
-
To my son, who came up with a message from Bill
Psaras, who further identified him as Francis.
-
To Patrick Osborne at Nat'l Personnel Records,
who at first could not help with the limited info I had at that
time, but suggested I contact JAG.
-
To JAG, who got me confirmation of name, service
#, and date of loss, and a copy of the report of investigation.
-
Back to Patrick Osborne, who then got me a copy
of the Deck Log of 12 March 1960.
-
To Lou Fricano who provided a lot of support, and
then came up with the picture taken on a tour to Venice, from La
Spezia, Italy, shortly before the loss.
-
To Frank Dean (HE WAS OUTSTANDING), in locating a
former childhood acquaintance that gave him the name of the
school attended by Terry's sister (the only living relative).
-
Terry’s school contacted Terry’s sister. She in
turn got back to Frank, and supplied the pictures of Terry
in dress blues, and of the Memorial Service, held on the fantail
in Thessalonika, Greece on 15 March 1960.
The Newport News webmasters have done a great job
in his section of the Memorial Page.
After all the years of never knowing this young
man's name, it was an honor, and a privilege to be a part of this
taking place, and to know that Terrance Francis McGee's family,
and friends, are aware that he's never been forgotten in his loss
while in the service of his country.

USS Newport
Museum Section
http://www.uss-newport-news.com/salem/
John Dowel has added a "Museum Tour" to our
web site. There are 70 new pictures added to this section. Taking
this "Picture Tour" is like walking through the areas of our
Museum on the USS Salem.
Picture pages Section.
http://www.uss-newport-news.com/nnpix/
The “USS NN Picture”
section of our web site has not been updated much in about 3
years. Why?? The job is overwhelming for one. Smaller or Higher
Priority projects have kept our USS NN Webmasters too busy!
John Dowell has volunteered
to take on this massive job of editing the pictures sent to us
over the last few years, and get them posted on our Web site.
The first pictures John has
uploaded are some amazing shots taken by Scott Mason on Oct 3,
1972 of the T2 Turret showing the massive damage the explosion
created on the turret. Scott Mason was a HT3 on the USS Piedmont
(AD-17), which was tied up next to the USS Newport News when she
pulled into Subic Bay for repairs.
To see these recently added
pictures, go to the Picture section at
http://www.uss-newport-news.com/nnpix/
Then click on where it says [T2 Gun Damage] in the Links header of
the web page.
USS Newport News
Mailing List
We have had a MAJOR problem
with our two mailing lists.
(1) USS Newport News Newsletter List
(2) USS NN Main Mailing list.
Mailing list Definition
reminder.
(1)
USS Newport New Newsletter list.
List of shipmates who want to receive our USS Newsletter. This is
a “Receive Only” mailing list, which means you can receive email
from this Mailing list but you cannot send emails to this mailing
list. This insures that only USS NN Related information is put out
on the “USS NN Newsletter” list.
(2)
USS Newport News Main Mailing list.
This is the mailing list that any shipmate who is on this mailing
list can send email to the rest of the member of this mailing
list. This email list is restricted to ONLY Topics about the USS
Newport News and our memories of serving on her. No other topic is
allow on this list
The short story is, I
upgraded the Internet server that we have our Web Site & Mailing
list on to a newer, faster, more secure server. When I moved our
old mailing list to the new server I could not get them to work
with the new Security Functions of the new server. While trying to
get the old email list working, I screwed it up beyond repair.
I looked around on the
Internet for a while looking for a new Email list service. I
picked Google’s new email list service because Google does not add
“Advertisement” to the emails being set out and because it looked
very easy to set up.
As it turned out, I was
very wrong about it being easy to set up!!!
Jim Sollee, our USS NN
Mailing List Administrator saved the day by spending every free
hour he had over the last two weeks adding the 1,140 shipmates to
the new mailing list on GOOGLE.
The “USS NN Newsletter”
mailing list (The list that you are receiving the email) is now
working and Jim will start setting out our “USS Newport News Main
Mailing list” over the next week or two.
Crew
Member’s web pages.
http://www.uss-newport-news.com/crew/
Herman Fisher has been
maintaining our Crew Member’s web pages for many years now and
does a wonderful job of keeping the “Crew Members” section
updated. We receive an average of 5 Add or Change information
request every week. Keeping up with this is a BIG JOB.
Have you checked the Crew Members Pages to see if any of your
shipmates have signed up on the web site?? If not, give it a try.
You may find some old friends there.
Remember, the crewmember’s
web pages are sorted by the Year & Month the crewmember first came
aboard the USS Newport News. This is to help put together
shipmates who served together on either the same page, or one page
before or after the page you are on.
There is also a great
“Search for Shipmates” search engine on the main crewmember’s page
to help you find old friends.
Reunion
Association membership
Have you moved recently??
If yes, then remember to give us your new Mailing Address so that
we can update the “USS Newport News Association Membership”
database.
Right about now each of you
are asking yourself, “I wonder if my information is correct on the
USS Newport News Association Membership” database?
To answer your question . .
.
Earlier this month, Al Siegel (USS NN Museum Foundation) send out
a postcard giving information about the USS NN reunion this summer
and about the Work Party before the reunion. If your received a
postcard from Siegel,
then we do have your correct address. If you did not receive the
postcard, then we do not have your correct postal mail address.
To correct your information
in our Membership Database,
Webmasters Needed.
We need shipmates who have web mastering
experience to join the USS Newport News Webmaster team. We have
many new projects to add to the web site, old web pages to update
and assorted general maintenance.
The USS Newport News web site is the largest
web site on the Internet that is dedicated to a specific ship. It
has won countless awards (see
http://www.uss-newport-news.com/award/ ) and features a large
verity of features. To maintain this monster takes a lot of time.
We accomplish maintaining our web site by having as many shipmates
as possible to share the workload.
If you would like to join our USS NN
Webmaster team, please let me know by sending an email to
Chuck Zendner . We have a lot of fun working
together on our USS NN web site. |
