USS Newport News Reunion

USS Newport News
Reunion 2005

June 20th to June 26, 2005
Boston Quincy Marriott in Quincy MA

Well Shipmates, The next reunion is just around the corner!

It is time to register for the reunion. We are only allocated a specific number of rooms so reserve yours now to make sure you have a place to sleep at the reunion.

We also need you to register with the USS Newport News Reunion Association as SOON as possible. February is the time to Register! May might be too late if all the rooms are taken.

It is most beneficial for both you and for the USS Newport Reunion Committee if you would register early. We must make our reservation with our vendors (reserving meals, rooms, entertainment) based on the number of reservations we have by the end of April, and guess at how many more are going to register. If we guess too high, we still have to pay for the extra meals, rooms we order. If we guess too low, then those who register in May will have to stay at a different Hotel and there will not be room in the Banquet rooms for them.

So, if you know you are going to the reunion in June, please register now to help us plan how many rooms, meals, and the size of the banquet rooms we need to reserve.

Go to http://www.uss-newport-news.com/reunion/ for all the basic information you will need, including the below subject.

  • Dates and location of Reunion.
  • Registration Forms (Print them on your printer and mail in.)
  • Discounts for early registration information.
  • Hotel room reservation information.
** Good News ** This year we can take Visa and MasterCard Cards for registration fees!!

USS NN Reunion 2005
Special Project

FROM: Al Siegel;
Reunion 2005, Bar Room Manager

Hey Guys:

OK – I need help. I am trying to put together a special room for our reunion that will replicate Papagayos Bar from Olongapo. As part of the room, I want to have blow ups of pictures from the bars in Subic Bay. Now I know that you guys have them somewhere – probably hidden from your wives or kids or both. But I really need some.

I promise to return all of them promptly, but I really could use a bunch to make the room look the way it should, John Noll and I are working on getting plenty of San Miguel beer, and I am planning on having nothing but music from the late 60’s. Should bring back plenty of memories. I will try to have Philipino waitresses as well, but that might be a stretch. So PLEASE – go through your garage or wherever, get the darn pictures and send them to me. It isn’t like I’m asking you to holy stone the deck. Spend 10 minutes and do your shipmate a favor…

You can send the photos to me at:

Sherman Oaks, CA 91403

Or scan them and E Mail the to
Al3@uss-newport-news.com

By the way, I have an actual menu from Papagayos that will be on display.

Any questions or offers of assistance let me know. My cell phone (818) 451-9158

See you soon.

 Finally!
A book about the
USS Newport News

THUNDER in the NIGHT

The book is called “Thunder in the Night, a Sailor's Perspective on Vietnam”. Ray Kopp, who was a member of the CR division during the 1972 Vietnam cruise, is the author of this book.

The book hit the market a couple of weeks ago. Many of us have already received and read our copy. All feedback from those who have read it gives this book outstanding reviews.

The book tells the story of what we all felt being in combat situations and living aboard a military combat ship during wartime. I am deeply impressed with the writing style, the historical information, and the way this book brings back long forgotten memories.

“Thunder in the Night” is not only of interest to those who served during the 1972 Cruise, but to anyone who served on any Military ship during combat. Ray has captured the true life memories of men on a Naval Ship, doing their duty to country and all the emotional ups and downs involved with the life of a sailor.

I have enjoyed every minute and every page of the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Navy History, but for anyone who served on the USS NN during any of the Vietnam cruises, this is a “Must Read” book.

The book sells for $23.95

To read more detailed information about this book, or to order your copy of this book please go to one or both of the below web sites.

 Ship's Store

We want to remind everyone about all the new goodies that Mike and Peggy Lanier have added to the USS Newport News ship's store since the last reunion. Our inventory and selection is truly outstanding.

In addition to all the standard items we have offered our shipmates like Ball Caps, Coffee Mugs, Zippo Lighters, T-shirts, Windbreakers, Ship’s Pictures, assorted Jewelry and hat pins, they have increased the selection of many of the above items, plus have added new items like USS Newport News personalized embroidery Denim Shirt, both short sleeved and long sleeved. Sun Visors, Sweat Shirts, USS NN Mouse Pads, Golfers pocket Divot Tool, Key chains and more.

USS NN BELT BUCKLES
They have a source for USS Newport News BELT BUCKLES for webbed belts that some of you have inquired about. Because of fairly expensive set-up costs for the raised ship's design on the front of the buckle, these will run somewhere around $25.00 each. There has to be a minimum order of 36 pieces, so we need to know if there are that many crewmembers out there that are interested in one of these. If you've lost yours or need a Great Gift, please contact them at ships_store@uss-newport-news.com
These will take a while to have manufactured, but if there is enough interest they will get them ordered.

As you all know, the mainstay of the USS Salem is the "Scout Overnight Program". The problems over the last few years with city of Quincy have lost the USS Salem a lot of revenue. The USS Newport News not only provides a Museum on this ship, but support our sister ship with work parties and other forms of support every chance we get.

On August 20th, 21st and 22nd 2004, Bob Freeman, his wife Ellie, and Art Hunt with the help of the USS Salem, manned a booth at the Hudson, NH "Old Home Days" to promote the Scout Overnight Program on the Salem in Southern New Hampshire.

They had handouts and videotape of the Scout program, Tour of the Salem and a tape that Dexter Goad sent of the Newport News. The idea was to promote the USS Salem and the USS Newport News.

The had a lot of interest people stop by their both.
