USS Newport News - April 2004 - Work
Party
FROM: Al Siegel; Museum President
ATTENTION ALL CREW MEMBERS, THEIR
FAMILIES AND FRIENDS
The USS Newport News Museum and Memorial Foundation is holding it's
2004 Working Party, May 29, 2004 to June 2, 2004 on board the USS
Salem in Quincy Massachusetts. You can come any or all of the days -
whatever works for you!
All hands are invited to join us and have an opportunity to meet old
acquaintances, do some chipping and painting, and hit the beach for a
lively liberty each night. This will probably be your only chance this
year to enjoy this special activity, so don't miss it. We all know
that time marches on and better to grab the opportunities while you
still can.
We will be assisting the Salem Association with the restoration of
some of the 3" mounts, repair to 5" Mount 51, and continued
maintenance of Turret 2. In addition we will be adding exhibits to our
museum, and making repairs as necessary. The USS Newport News
Foundation will provide all the supplies - you just provide the elbow
grease. This is not just an all hands event, but is available to
family members and friends as well.
We will have colors each morning and sundown, raising one of our
Newport News flags up the mainmast.
The Salem is available for berthing on board if you would like to do
that. Many of us have and it is quite the time. You will need to
provide your own bedding, toiletries and towels, but will have a
chance to hit your own rack for a few days. Remember when you walked
around with flip flops when you went to the head - well bring them
again. Also bring a flashlight as the ship goes red after 2200. There
is no food service on board the Salem, and we all go out for lunch and
dinner (except for Saturday when we will be bringing it in)
If you prefer to stay at a hotel instead, we have secured an excellent
rate at the Quincy Marriott - $79 per day plus tax. Reservations will
be made for you through the USS Newport News Foundation - you can't
call directly on your own. Transportation will be available to get you
to the ship (a number of us will have our cars their and we just all
carpool). If you fly in during the day, there is a water shuttle (the
Harbor Express) that takes you from the airport right to the Salem -
literally 100 yards from the afterbrow.
Saturday evening, June 1st, we will be holding a memorial service to
honor the memory of all our shipmates that have passed. We will follow
that with an all hands dinner in the wardroom, courtesy of the
Foundation to all you swabies that made the effort to come and help.
This is an important cause. Historic Naval museum ships like the USS
Salem need to be cared for so that generations to come can understand
the experiences we all shared while aboard. The Newport News is gone,
but her memory lives in her sister - the Salem. Come out, join the fun
and help preserve our legacy.
