USS Newport News Work Party
Sponsored by the
USS Newport News Museum and Memorial Foundation

USS Newport News - April 2004 - Work Party

FROM: Al Siegel; Museum President

On April 29th to May 2nd 2004, the Newport News Museum and Memorial Foundation will be holding a large workparty on board the USS Salem in Quincy, Mass.

This workparty will have a lot to do. In addition to updating the museum and memorial displays, we will be completely cleaning, chipping and painting as many of the 3" mounts as we are able to get to. Hopefully we will be able to rotate and elevate the guns after we are done (I am not a gunner's mate so forgive my enthusiasm).

We also need to repair Mount 51 (the 5" mount just forward of the bridge). That mount has a severe leak somewhere. We need to find it, fix it, then clean and paint the handling rooms for the mount.

I have had a huge response already from many of you wanting to know the details.

We are trying to arrange berthing on board the Salem for those of you that want to stay on board. There will be no charge to you, although the foundation will be making a donation to the Salem to allow us to us their facilities. In addition, I have arranged a $79 per night rate (plus tax) at the Marriott hotel. There are other motels/hotels in the area - please select whichever one you want.

Obviously this event is 6 months away, but I didn't want any of you to miss out. This event is always a great success, particularly to our first timers. You have a change to relive the good old days and work and go on liberty with your shipmates. Don't miss out - time marches on and you never know when the next time will be.

So hold the dates and more information will be coming your way in a month or so.

All the best to you and your families

Al Siegel ETR2
OE Division 1967-1970
Museum President

A funny thing happen one night off
the coast of Vietnam

Below is a funny story from the USS Newport News History. A gentleman, who served on the USS Davidson DE-1045 in 1969, reported this to me. He was compiling history on his ship and ran across our web site. During a few emails we exchanged, he shared the below event.

Late one night in 1969, off the coast of Vietnam, the USS Davidson picked up a target on the radar going through our petrol area. By filtered flashing light the USS Davidson asked for the ship to identify it self.

The ship wouldn't answer so we repeated the message and the ship was very slow to reply. The reply was for us to identify our self’s, which pissed off our bridge officer. The bridge officer reply back to the unidentified ship with the message of, “This is the USS Davidson, man of war, answer up and identify your self or we will blow you out of the water.”

The reply came back, “This is Thunder. Give it a try”

The officer's on our bridge quickly looked up who Thunder was and it turned out to be the USS Newport News. I remember the bridge officer saying, “Well we could chip some paint off of her I guess, but lets not give it a try” as we turned to go back in for gun fire support.
