USS Newport News Reunion Association

THUNDER!

What does April 15th mean to you?

Yes, your taxes are due, but more importantly, April 15th is also the due date for registering for the USS Newport News 2003 Reunion!!

If you have not register yet, it is not too late. Get your registration in the mail this week to insure you have a place at all the activities and feeding that will be going on.

When? June 26 - 29, 2003
Where? Boston Quincy Marriott Hotel Quincy, Mass.

Don't forget!!
If you are attending Reunion 2003
you must separately register
with the Boston Quincy Marriott
for your room.

Remember, Registration requires 2 Steps.
  • Register with the USS Newport News Reunion Association
  • Register at the Boston Quincy Marriott Hotel. (Unless you have made other sleeping arrangements) Our rooms are blocked from 6/23/2003 - 6/29/2003 only.

We are a bit concerned about the fact that there are more people registered for Rooms at the Marriott than have registered for the reunion. You must register for both!

See the list of Registered Shipmates at the bottom of this Newsletter. If you think you are registered, but not on the list, please take these steps!

  • 1. Go to our USS Newport News Reunion web site.
    http://www.uss-newport-news.com/reunion/
Click through the information web pages that cover where, when and what is happening.  See how to make your reservations at the hotel and how to register with the USS NN Reunion Association. If you are going to the reunion, you MUST register this week.

  • 2 If you feel that you have registered as described on the web site, but you do not see your name on the list below, then contact Jim Peden peden@uss-newport-news.com
Chairman ; USS Newport News Reunion Association
You can Register for the USS Newport News Reunion RIGHT NOW,
by going to our "Registration Form" web page
at http://www.uss-newport-news.com/reunion/online-registration.html
From the emails going around, and comments from the crew, it looks like we may end up with a lot more shipmates going to this reunion than originally expected. So get your hotel reservation in now to make sure you will have a place to sleep!

USS Newport News Museum
Reunion Work Party Information

A Message from Al Siegel;
USS Newport News Museum President

Subject:  PRE REUNION WORKPARTY

We will be holding a large workparty June 23 - 25 on board the USS Salem to prepare the ship for our reunion and memorial program.  There is much that needs to be done and as many of you that can take the time to help would be appreciated.  You can assist all or any of the days shown - any help would be great.  Our efforts will include chipping and painting main deck areas, putting up patriotic bunting along starboard side railing, steam cleaning the deck, completing the memorial display in Turret 2, completing the 2nd and 6th Fleet exhibits in our museum area, retouching most forward areas around mounts 51, Turret 2 and Turret 1, painting ladders etc.  Lunch will be provided to our workparty crew each day.   please send me any questions you might have -

If you want to participate in the work party all of the days or any one of them, sign up for the work party by going to our "Work Party Signup Web Page"
at http://www.uss-newport-news.com/salem/workparty_museum.htm
or please let me know by sending email to
siegel@uss-newport-news.com

There is also a section of the reunion sign up form that asks the same thing.  Be sure to get those forms in as quickly as possible.  Those are available on the Internet at
http://www.uss-newport-news.com/reunion/online-registration.html

MAN THE RAILS (MTR)

This is a reminder to those of you that have not yet done so, that some of us will once again have an opportunity to put on the uniform that we wore with pride while a Newport News Sailor or Marine.  As part of the reunion activities on Saturday, June 28th, volunteers, in uniform, will be manning the rails and assisting with the raising of Newport News flags over the USS Salem.  As of the date of this announcement, over 110 men have already signed up to be part of the service.

All of the MTR volunteer group will be wearing short sleeve white shirts, white pants, white web belt with brass buckle, black shoes and a NN hat.  In addition, you are authorized to wear your rank patch on the left sleeve, your ship's patch on your upper right sleeve and any ribbons that you earned while in service to your country.

Those that sign up for the MTR service can obtain a ship's patch from me if you don't have your own.  You must first complete your reunion sign up form, submit it to Jim Peden and he will advise me that you want to be part of the man the rails crew. I will then contact you with specific information and can send you a ship's patch.

We will be mustering at 10:00 in front of Turret 1 for instructions and group picture.  We will have a practice run through, break for chow and then man the rails as our VIPs and former captains arrive.  Following that we will have a flag raising ceremony in which actual NN flags are raised over the USS Salem.  MTR crewmembers will be  handling that function as well.

Looking forward to having as many of you join us as possible and boatswain's mates that still can pipe aboard visitors and want to assist by doing so, please let me know.

USS Newport News
Web Site Status and Updates.
What's New, What has changed on our web Site

** Updating the USS NN Crew Member's Web pages  **

Message from
Herm Fischer; Crew Page Web Master.

Hello USS Newport News Shipmates:

We are doing a "clean up" on our USS Newport News Web Site – Crew members pages located at http://www.uss-newport-news.com/crew/

I sent out an email about two weeks ago to test your email address as listed on the Newport News Crew Pages.

If you DID NOT receive that test email in the last two weeks, then we have lost contact with you and need you to check your crew page to make sure all the information is correct.

The purpose of this email is to.

  1. Check to see if your email listed on the crewmember’s pages is correct. The purpose of you being on the crewmember’s page is so that your old shipmates can find you and re-start old friendships

  2. To ask you to check your Information on the Crewmember’s page. If you have not already done so, please take a moment and go to http://www.uss-newport-news.com/crew/ and verify that your information is correct.

  • Is "Time served on board" Correct? Did you put the months you came on and left? (If you can’t remember, give it a good guess.)

  • Did you remember to put your Rate? Rank? What division you served in. (If served in more than one Div, list them all)

  • Is the email address your current email address or is it some old address that will be dead someday?

Many shipmates did not fill in all the information, so take a moment to verify your information. If you need something changed, please go to
    http://www.uss-newport-news.com/crew/nn_signup1.htm
and mark the form "Change Previous Information" and fill this out the way you want your information displayed on the web site.

If you received the test email a couple of weeks ago, then your address on the web site is working.

Message from
Chuck Zendner
USS NN Web Site Administrator.

Let me add some additional comments to Herman’s article above.

Don’t let us loose track of you. If your email address changes, or if your US Postal address changes, remember to let us know!

The USS Newport News Association sends out a letter now and then to the 2,000+ US Mail addresses we have on file. If you move, or your mailing address (US Post office Address) changes, please let us know so you won’t miss out on the next mailing.

Changing your email address is common. We all get upset at our Internet service provider and change ISP’s, which also changes our email address. Or we just simply change our email address to stop all that SPAM coming to us. Remember, if you change your email address, let us know so that we can keep you on the USS Newport News Newsletter email list.

Now, I know this is going to sound strange. But to avoid 25 emails to us asking, “Am I on the USS NN Newsletter email list?” Well, if you are reading this newsletter, then you ARE on the list. If you didn’t get this email, then you are not on the list (But those that didn’t get this, won't  know they are not on the list).  Think about that for a moment!

Anytime your mailing address, or your email address, or any information about you changes, go to two places to let us know.

To change your Email Address or Information on the USS NN Crew Member pages
go to http://www.uss-newport-news.com/crew/nn_signup1.htm

Which changes information on the Crew Members web site will update your email information on the email list. Mark this form as “Change Information”

To change your US Postal Address (Snail Mail) to go the USS NN Association signup page
at http://www.uss-newport-news.com/reunion/nn_reun1.htm
