 A Message from Jim Peden
Chairman ; USS Newport News Reunion Association
When? June 26 - 29, 2003
Where? Boston Quincy Marriott Hotel Quincy, Mass.

Don't forget!!
If you are attending Reunion 2003
you must separately register
with the Boston Quincy Marriott
for your room.

Reserve your room NOW at the Boston Quincy Marriott at our special discount rate of $109 per night by calling the Marriott Reservation System toll-free at 866-449-7387 (or call the hotel direct if you wish at 617-472-1000).

Tell them you are with the Newport News Reunion and want our discount rate of $109.  Reserve the rooms you need for the appropriate dates shown on the back of this page.

We have 200 rooms for our use at the discount rate, and they are already going rapidly.  While we may be able to increase the block when these are filled, at this time we are in competition with the general public for anything beyond our present block of 200.

Our rooms are blocked from 6/23/2003 - 6/29/2003 only.

Our regular snail mail reunion signup stuff is going out soon.  Obviously, if you have already registered, you don't need to send the form back again.  We'll be mailing out confirmation letter after the Reunion signup final deadline of April 15th, 2003.

You can Register for the USS Newport News Reunion RIGHT NOW,
but going to our "Registration Form" web page
at http://www.uss-newport-news.com/reunion/online-registration.html

Click through the tour of information web pages that cover where, when and what is happening.  See the entertainment planned, the schedule of events and how to make your reservations at the hotel, which is something everyone should do as soon a possible.

From the emails going around, and comments from the crew, it looks like we may end up with a lot more shipmates going to this reunion than originally expected. So get your Hotel reservation in now to make sure you will have a place to sleep!

USS Newport News Museum
Reunion Work Party Information

A Message from Al Siegel;
USS Newport News Museum President
From Email dated Feb 8, 2003

To all Newport News shipmates, their families and friends:

Subject:  June Work Party and Memorial Program 6/28

This year's reunion is going to be great. Through the hard work of our reunion President, Jim Peden, we will all share an experience that we will long remember.  The fact that we will be spending a good amount of time on the USS Salem, sister ship to the Newport News, walking the passageways and compartments of our youth, makes this reunion unique.  BUT there is a lot to do before the reunion begins.

For the last few years, many shipmates, their families and friends have spent countless hours on board the Salem preparing a museum for the Newport News and a Memorial for our fallen shipmates.  The week before the reunion will be critical to get everything squared away.

Topside areas need to be chipped and painted, the interior of Turret 2 needs a final coat of paint, polish and cleaning, the museum needs to be made spotless and exhibits need to be completed and secured, patriotic bunting needs to be placed on the starboard side railing, halyards need repair, Mount 51 needs leak repair, cleaning and painting, and much more, including preparing the ship for the Saturday Man the Rails, Flag Raising and Memorial Service.

The more volunteers we get, the sooner all this can be done.

All work party members can stay aboard the Salem during the work party period, Monday June 23 to Thursday June 26.

There is no available berthing on the Salem
Thursday night to Sunday night while the reunion is going on.

Some people will want to come the weekend before, and arrangements have been made to accommodate that hearty group. All supplies will be provided and many of the meals. You need to bring your own work clothes, gloves etc.  There will be formal PODs issued daily which will indicate your work area. Our September work party was a great success and everyone had a wonderful time during chow or while on liberty, talking over stories from our youth.

If you want to participate in the work party all of the days or any one of them, sign up for the work party by going to our "Work Party Signup Web Page"
at http://www.uss-newport-news.com/salem/workparty_museum.htm
or please let me know by sending email to
siegel@uss-newport-news.com

There is also a section of the reunion sign up form that asks the same thing.  Be sure to get those forms in as quickly as possible.  Those are available on the Internet at
http://www.uss-newport-news.com/reunion/online-registration.html

The Saturday activities will be very special.  We will see many of our shipmates in their summer whites, manning the rails to pipe aboard VIPs.  After the VIPs are aboard we will have colors and flags of the Newport News will be raised.  We will then have a memorial service and following that the official dedication of the museum.

If you want to be part of that experience, all you need to have is a white short-sleeve uniform, web belt and buckle, black shoes and a NN hat.  It is authorized for you to wear your uniform if you were honorably discharged.  This is a special memorial event and wearing of the uniform, ribbons etc, by veterans is permitted. So.. if you still have that old uniform and actually fit in it - brush off the moth balls and wear it with pride.

For those that no longer fit or don't have one any longer, there are a few places where you can pick up a uniform and a web site where you can get a ratings patch. These are 2 that were passed on to me by Bill Firman FTG2 66-69.  I ordered from these places and received my order promptly.

For ratings patch try:  http://www.flightdeckexchange.com/
Get the white cotton patch NOT the poplin.

For uniforms try:  Armed Forces Outfits, Inc.
Email -
www.armynavylinks.com
Toll Free - (877) 321-ARMY,  (704) 853-8141,  Fax - (704) 853-2326
Ask for John.

If you need to get new ribbons for your uniform, one place you can go to is
http://www.usmedals.com/index.php3?id_medals=0501583668

For those of you that intend to put on the uniform and join us, I have made up Newport News shoulder patches from an original in our museum.  I will be happy to send you one to put on your shirt.  Just send me your address.

All of our uniformed volunteers will need to muster on the Salem Saturday morning at 1000 for rehearsal and instruction. Refreshments will be served.

This will be an event to remember - don't miss out!

Looking for 6th and 2nd fleet
Pictures and memorabilia

A Message from Al Siegel;
USS Newport News Museum President
From Email dated Sept 25, 2002

Attention All 6th and 2nd Fleet Crew:

The Newport News Museum wants your pictures and memorabilia.  We are now proceeding to put together a pictorial display of those days when the ship was the pride of the Med and the North Atlantic.  BUT - we need your help.

Please look through your garages, attics, closets and find us some great slides, pictures or movies that will paint a picture for the viewing public of what is was like to be on our great ship.

The pictures, movies need to be good quality shots that are easy to understand.  Small images won't work.  So.. if you have pictures of the ship at anchor in Villa France, side by side with Russian freighters in the Caribbean, the crew airing bedding etc etc.. send them to us.  Make sure you send originals or good quality copies - we will not be returning them to you UNLESS we don't use them.  If you are sending slides, make sure they meet the same criteria.  We will evaluate and make blow ups of the ones that fit our needs.

The people making the decision will be those that served aboard at those times.  In other words, our Commissioning to 1961 crew will evaluate the Med items, and our post '61 Non-7th Fleet crew will evaluate 2nd Fleet material.

We have had a few shipmates volunteer help out with the 6th Fleet exhibit, but could use more. If you would like to help and be a member of the evaluation committee, please let me know.  I will put you in touch with the right people.

We are planning to have all of this work completed during the March 14th work party, so please start now and get those pictures on the way.

Many Thanks

Send to:
