Painting of the
USS Newport News,

by USS NN Shipmate,
Dave Brownstead.

One of our shipmates has a very interesting offer that some of you may be interested in.

Dave Brownstead is a professional artist who was stationed on the USS Newport News from Aug 1970 to Nov 1973 as a RM3 in the CR Division. He has created a watercolor painting of our ship on a firing mission off the coast of Vietnam.

The offer to purchase this painting went out the USS NN Main Mailing list last week and they are selling like Hot-Cakes. There have been 33 request for the picture already.

These are prints of the original painting, each one signed by the artist.
They will be available for shipping in about 3 or 4 weeks.

The picture is going to the printer Monday (10/21/2002) to make up the prints for those who have ordered plus some extras for future sells. But, if you interested in one of these paintings, put your order in now before all the "extra prints" are all sold out.

The above picture is a cropped and compress and does not show all of the painting.  To see a larger example picture, to purchase one of these pictures, or to put one on hold to purchase sometime in the near future,
go to http://www.uss-newport-news.com/events/brownstead/

USS Newport News Museum
Report on the Last Work Party. Sept 19-22, 2002

A Message from Al Siegel;
USS Newport News Museum President
From Email dated Sept 24, 2002
Subject: Work party Wrap Up

Gentlemen (and ladies):

As a very wise Englishman said over 60 years ago, "Never have so few done so much for so many"

When we started planning this event over 6 months ago, through literally thousands of Emails, fund raising efforts, phone calls, planning, etc., none of us could have imagined just how successful the work party would turn out.

All I can say is "awesome". As a member of the work party crew, it was a privilege to get to know all of you and to be one of the crew again.  Whether it was just sitting back aft on the fantail eating chow and talking about old times, getting the museum and AV squared away, running supplies back and forth (we spent $987 on supplies in the 4 days), climbing on ladders
or laying on your backs chipping and painting, getting the inside of Turret 2 to be the clean and squared away place that it should be to honor our fallen shipmates, and particularly sharing those quiet but powerful moments during our memorial service, we were a crew again -- it was a great feeling.

There are so many people that did so much -- about as much as they could. And when someone said to me "Al, I have had it -- can't do no more", 15 minutes later he was back at it, because he didn't want any of his buddies to have to finish his area for him.  That is what brotherhood is all about. Richard Jordan said it so well at our memorial service - I will always remember that time and thank Richard for being so eloquent and a friend and shipmate to us all.

Our work, however, is not done.  The focus is now on putting together a great display for our 6th and 2nd Fleet brothers.  We will be asking for volunteers from the 50s and 60s to plan and design their displays.  We will need pictures, slides, memorabilia and ideas. I have spoken to a number of you already and would hope that we can get this going ASAP so it might be completed by the reunion next June.

To that end we have tentatively arranged a mini work party for the weekend of March 14th.  The purpose will be to target interior areas of the ship, the 6th and 2nd Fleet museum displays, Mount 51 handling room, Flag office and an AV display for Turret 2. I look forward to staying aboard ship and hanging out with those of you guys that will be there.

With the holidays approaching, there is much to be thankful for.  Included is certainly the fact that we have rediscovered that special bond that ties us together as veterans and shipmates.

Best wishes and good health to all of you and your families.

Al Siegel

Subject:  Work party results

Shipmates,

Please accept my humble words of appreciation for the splendid restoration work that you accomplished this past weekend.  I was thrilled to witness such camaraderie and selfless dedication to the many tasks that you took upon your shoulders.

Your contribution of over $1000 in maintenance supplies and 400 Man Days of effort to the preservation and restoration of Salem is noted with deepest appreciation and will be reported to the Salem Assn membership at our reunion n October.  I have been recording working parties for the past seven years and this year the total man days took a quantum leap forward thanks to the efforts of the USS Newport News crew.

Moreover, Salem is coming alive with her fresh coat of paint and is fast approaching the splendor of her days as SIXTH Fleet.  I congratulate you on your beautiful memory room display and am eagerly looking forward to your future display developments and to your assistance in completing some that I have proposed.

You are the future of the USS Salem!  May the Eternal Father bless and protect each of you until we meet again for the next work party.

With best wishes to all of our shipmates, I remain
Sincerely yours

Don Shirey

USS Newport News Museum

Looking for 6th and 2nd fleet
Pictures and memorabilia

A Message from Al Siegel;
USS Newport News Museum President
From Email dated Sept 25, 2002

Attention All 6th and 2nd Fleet Crew:

The Newport News Museum wants your pictures and memorabilia.  We are now proceeding to put together a pictorial display of those days when the ship was the pride of the Med and the North Atlantic.  BUT - we need your help.

Please look through your garages, attics, closets and find us some great slides, pictures or movies that will paint a picture for the viewing public of what is was like to be on our great ship.

The pictures, movies need to be good quality shots that are easy to understand.  Small images won't work.  So.. if you have pictures of the ship at anchor in Villa France, side by side with Russian freighters in the Caribbean, the crew airing bedding etc etc.. send them to us.  Make sure you send originals or good quality copies - we will not be returning them to you UNLESS we don't use them.  If you are sending slides, make sure they meet the same criteria.  We will evaluate and make blow ups of the ones that fit our needs.

The people making the decision will be those that served aboard at those times.  In other words, our Commissioning to 1961 crew will evaluate the Med items, and our post '61 Non-7th Fleet crew will evaluate 2nd Fleet material.

If you would like to help and be a member of the evaluation committee, please let me know.  I will put you in touch with the right people.

We are planning to have all of this work completed during the March 14th work party, so please start now and get those pictures on the way.

Many Thanks

Next Work Party Information

A Message from Al Siegel;
USS Newport News Museum President
From Email dated Oct 1, 2002

Hello all you worn out shipmates:

We have set the dates for upcoming work parties.  I will try to give you as much information as I can about them.  Obviously, the Salem is always available to those in the area who want to come down for a day or two, when there are no formal work parties.  You might want to contact Bob Freeman BobFreeman@netzero.net or Al Babson Bikerhoppy@aol.com about that.

March 14 - 16, 2003

This work party will cover mostly interior areas of the ship, focusing on the museum area and interior of T2.  By that time we hope to have additional walls erected in the former USS Boston area.  Those walls will be used for three new display areas - 6th Fleet, 2nd Fleet and Liberty Call (my favorite of all).  We will also be constructing, along the forward port side area of the museum, a hands on quartermaster display, incorporating the actual ships wheel in a mock up of the bridge.  Finally, we hope to get started on a larger theater area, with seats for 15 people or so.  Work will continue on our current museum area, and the deck throughout will need to be painted.  Turret 2 will begin construction on the memorial display to be housed there, including video, pictures and artifacts.  The bulk of the barbette has now been cleaned.

Pre Reunion Work party - June 23 - 25

This work party, just prior to our big reunion and dedication is critical. Our reunion President Jim Peden will need all the help he can get. All the exterior areas of T2, Mount 51, 52 and 53, superstructure and T1 will need a fresh coat of paint.  The teak wood deck (what remains of it) will need to be cleaned. We will need to lay out patriotic bunting along the starboard side of the ship, get our new signal flags in place, ensure that all flag staffs are in good working order, and a whole variety of other duties. Certainly the museum areas and all our displays will need clean up, adjustments repairs etc. We need as many shipmates as possible.  I plan to arrive the weekend before, on the 21st, and would encourage as many of you as possible to do the same.  I would also hope that all our work party members will join the man the rails ceremony to be held on Saturday the 28th.  More information on that will be coming from our reunion people.

Please let me know what you are able to do.  It has been a real privilege to work with all of you and I look forward to seeing you again soon.

Any questions - just E Mail me.

Al Siegel
