A Message from Al Siegel;
USS Newport News Museum President
From Email dated Aug 10, 2002
To all shipmates from Al
Siegel (ETR2 67-70) regarding September workparty on the USS
Salem.
The time is almost here. Over 65 shipmates and their
families are mustering on board the USS Salem (in Quincy,
Mass) for workparty, evening liberty call and mid-rats!
The dates of the workparty are September 19-22. For
those of you that have not yet signed up, the time to do so is
now. You don't have to be there all 4 days, come the
days you can, but don't miss out. This is probably the
last chance to truly relive the days of yesteryear when we all
had hair, about 50 pounds less and didn't wear glasses.
We will be chipping, painting, cleaning, getting our museum
and memorial areas squared away. You will all be amazed
at the progress that had been made on our museum and T2
Memorial displays. A lot of dedicated guys have spent a
huge amount of time working in those areas, and we all owe
them a debt of gratitude. In particular I want to
acknowledge Bob Freeman (5th Div 60-63), Joe Shea (5th Div
61-63), Al Babson (2nd Div 69-72), Mike Lanier (H Div 67-69),
John Noll (OE Div 66-70) and last, but certainly not least,
the man that keeps the memories alive, Chief Dexter Goad (FOX
Div 61-64 and 66-70). I also want to thank Chuck Zendner (H
Div 72-73 and John Dowell (FOX Div 67-70) for keeping our
museum's web site up and running. Knowing me I probably forgot
someone, and if I did please forgive me. I promise to
buy the first few rounds Thursday night.
After knock off ship's work, we all hit the beach to talk
about all those great stories we think we remember...
Then Saturday night we have the big dinner in the wardroom of
the Salem - I will be one of the mess cooks so keep an eye out
for unusual things running around your mashed potatoes!
We have quite a number of guys and their sons/friends sleeping
on board the Salem, thanks to arrangements made for us by
Joanne Walsh, Director of the Shipbuilding Museum, her staff,
and our shipmates of the Salem Association, notably Radarman
Bill Anderson. You can stay on board too if you like,
but you need to bring your toiletries, bedding and don't
forget those shower shoes! If you prefer to use a nearby
hotel, we have secured a great rate of 95 per night at the
Quincy Marriott.
BUT - time is running out. A lot of things need to be
planned, so a final muster list must be assembled. Make
sure you notify me no later than Sept 4 if you want to join
us.
One more thing, make sure you all remember to set aside June
26-29 2003 for our grand reunion and museum dedication.
Jim Peden (FOX 60-62) and his crew have been putting in plenty
of OT getting that ready and it will be one heck of a party
Hope to see you soon.

party, please fill out the information on our web page at

A Message from Al Siegel;
USS Newport News Museum President
From Email dated Aug 25, 2002
Pictures and slides from our days in the Navy
are beginning to deteriorate. Images of our legacy will be lost
forever. If any Vietnam Era shipmates (1967-1972) have any
personal very good quality pictures or slides that show the crew
in various activities, above and below decks, or the ship in
action or in ports like Subic, Kaoshung, Sasebo, Hong Kong, Guam
etc., we would love to get them. Please do not send any that have
small images - we need good close up shots so the viewing public
can understand what is going on. These photos will be blown up and
presented on the aft bulkhead of the
museum which is dedicated to the 3 Vietnam cruises.
Shipmates from other eras should do the same - time is running
out!
Of particular importance to all our veterans, from commissioning
to decom, are any 8mm movies that you might have of the ship or
the crew. We are building an audio/visual display that will
incorporate shipmate's home movies of Newport News through her
entire life - 6th Fleet, 2nd Fleet and 7th Fleet. Included
would be movies of liberty in ports like Villefranche, San Juan,
Hong Kong, Olangapo etc. Movies of the Cuban missile crisis
involvement, or Black Sea operations. Gunnery practice in Gitmo
etc. Of immense importance would be any movies of activities below
decks. That would be a rare and incredibly important find.
If they are already converted to video or DVD - all the better.
Remember, anything that you might have to offer would be greatly
appreciated, but it has to be good quality images AND ALL PHOTOS
MUST BE EXPLAINED - DATES, LOCATION, ACTIVITY etc..
Please send them ASAP, since we need to evaluate them during our
workparty
next month Sept 19-22 on board the Salem in Quincy, Mass.
Send to:

Many Thanks
