USS Newport News Museum
and Memorial Foundation

A Message from Al Siegel;
USS Newport News Museum Curator

Our last USS NN work party was a great success, with all hands putting in a good days work and then enjoying the sea stories and a drink or two in the evening.

The next work party, which will be held September 19-22, 2002, is critical as it will be the last large work party prior to our big reunion June 2003.

As the work on the museum is winding down, we now focus our efforts on completing the memorial to our fallen shipmates in Turret 2.  That project involves finishing the cleaning and polishing of all 5 levels of the barbette, installing, and painting, stairs to permit access to the turret by those that can't negotiate the hanging ladders, chip and paint the underside area of the turret, all ladders leading from the main deck to the Turret area and the 01 level just outside the Turret. In addition, the exterior of Mount 52 needs a new face.

This is just an overview of what we need to work on.  With a good size crew, it should be no problem.  We got a lot done on the March 8th work party, so we should be able to get the job done.  We will need additional tools, needle guns, paint brushes, tarps and other supplies, but should be able to obtain them from our guys between now and then.  The USS Salem does have a number of items we can use, but we should use our own materials.

Our work parties are a great experience -- just ask any of the 41 that were just there.  And having all this fun isn't just for us. Your kids and friends are most welcome -- heck, they should learn what a chipping hammer is.  We had a number of sons at the last WP, and they were incredibly helpful -- became honorary shipmates overnight.

Same berthing arrangements apply.  You can sleep aboard the USS Salem for at no cost to you, but you will need to bring your own bedding and toiletries, if you plan to sleep on the USS Salem.

Or you can stay at the Marriott where we have obtained a great room rate. In either case, liberty call goes down at 1700, and the sea stories start to flow like beer.

Take a look at your calendar, save the dates and go to our web site and fill out the sign up form.  Don't miss out -- this is the last one!!

Best regards.

 Work Party Picture Pages

Comments about the USS Newport News Work party
and our next reunion.
By Chuck Zendner.

If your on the USS Newport News Main Mailing list, then you have already read all about the good times the 41 of us former members of the USS NN had on the work party a few weeks ago.

And you have seen ALL the picture of the work party that Dexter Goad and Chuck Zendner put up on their personal web sites. And you have read about all the fun that was had over that weekend.

But, even you 680 members of the USS NN Main Mailing list don't know about the 42 NEW - Never seen before pictures that have been added to the USS Newport News Museum web page.

To see these new pictures, Click Here to go to the "March 8-10 Work party Picture Page"

For the 220 of you who are only on this "Newsletter Mailing list" and not on the USS NN main mailing list, you can still visit Dexter's and Chuck's collection of work party pictures by going to the "March 8-10 Work party Picture Page" and at the bottom of this web page are links to Dexter's and Chuck's work party picture pages.

Now, for those of you only on this USS NN Newsletter list, and have not seen all the emails about what a great time we all had, you may be asking why all the excitement over a work party. The answer is simply because it was SO MUCH FUN, and such a great emotional high experience to spend a few days with your shipmates aboard the USS Salem. It's like stepping into a Time Machine that teleports you back to the days you lived on the USS Newport News. Once you have been on the ship and go down below, you forget that it is the USS Salem and you will swear that you are on the USS Newport News.

The staff of the USS Salem could not have possibly treated us any better. We pretty much had the run of the ship and we felt right at home there.

Most of us slept at the Marriott Hotel, which is like living in luxury. The service was wonderful and the accommodations were perfect. This is going to be a GREAT PLACE to have our reunion next year! And having the reunion near the USS Salem is going to make this very special affair.

From the responses of our shipmates so far, it looks like we will have even more shipmates show up for the next work party in September, and a lot more wives are coming. So, plan a great weekend, bring the wife and join the fun. It's like a "Mini Reunion"!

Spending the weekend working, playing, and visiting with my shipmates while walking the decks of the USS Salem is a experience of a life time. The fact that the few days spent on the ship helps the USS Newport News Museum and Memorial foundation, and helps with the restoration of the USS Salem is secondary in my mind. The enjoyment of being there, being involved with something important and the memories that were flooding through my brain is the reason I am going back to the next work party.

If you are going to go to the next work party, please go to the "Work Party Signup" Web page and fill out that form. Although signing up at the web page is not required to go, it does help us plan for the event and gives us the information needed for assorted situations.

Click here to sign up for the next work party!

Anyway, that's my Opinions!
