USS Newport News Reunion Association
Jim Peden; Chairman
Greetings Shipmates:
The best news this month is the
impending return of our Ship's Bell.
| After many months of hard work and effort
on the part of many of our
USS NN Museum crew, the Mariners Museum
in Norfolk Virginia has been authorized to release the Ships
Bell of the USS Newport News CA148 to our museum on the USS
Salem.
We are in the process of arranging for it's delivery
and should have it in time for the work party. |
|
| The USS NN
Museum crew has also obtained from the
Mariner's Museum the Memorial Plaque for the Oct 1, 1972
Explosion.
Both the Bell and the Memorial Plaque will be valued
additions to our collection |

EARLY
WARNING ITEM:
From Jim Peden.
If you live within an easy day's drive of Lake Champlain,
and own a boat, then be warned that I am in the early stages of
organizing a CRUISER SAILOR'S FLOTILLA
PARADE on Lake Champlain. This will be a parade of
privately owned boats manned by cruiser sailors who will lay a
wreath on the waters in honor of all naval seamen who died there
during the Revolutionary War. We will form up, parade to a
designated spot, lay the wreath, then retire to the shoreline
for an evening cookout and possibly an overnight camp (or sleep
on your boat, if you have a cuddy cabin). Dates and other
information to follow, but in the meantime,
EMAIL me if you
are interested.
Smooth Sailing,
Chairman ; USS Newport News Reunion
Association

USS Newport News Museum
and Memorial Foundation
|
A
Message from Al Siegel;
USS Newport News Museum Curator
Just 4 more weeks until the
Museum and Memorial Foundation holds it's work party! Looking
forward to getting together with those who are coming in from all
over our the United States to get things taken care!
The work party is March 8th to March 10th board the USS Salem. So
far, there are over 30 of us showing up and the number increases
almost every day.
The purpose of the work party will be to finalize the lay out of
the museum area, install the display cards and complete the
Vietnam era section. In addition, the guys will start work on
cleaning up Turret 2, in preparation of building a
memorial and audio/visual display, and permitting visitors to
explore the workings of the turret.
USS Newport News Museum crew has
diligently pursued getting the bell back, and if all goes well, we
should have the bell in our Museum in the very near future.
All hands are invited to participate. It would be helpful to bring
your own work clothes and equipment, including rags, gloves,
flashlights etc. There will also be plenty of time to tour the
Salem and find your old work spaces. Best of all will be liberty
call each evening after knock off ship's work, and the crew will
visit the nearest watering hole to relive some of our Newport News
adventures.
Volunteers can sleep aboard the Salem for no charge or can stay at
the local Marriott where we have obtained a great rate of $79 per
night.
Below are the names of Shipmates and Friends who have signed up
for the Work Party. If you are coming, and don't see your name
listed below, Please go to
http://www.uss-newport-news.com/salem/workpartyform_museum.htm
and get signed up!

Looking for Old Models
of the USS Newport News.
|
The USS Newport News
Museum group is searching for a full scale model of the Newport
News. There have been a number of potential leads, but
none proved out.
there was a brass model at RTC San Diego. It is no longer
there and we don't know what happened to it.
In addition, in 1951,
DC1 Norm Beauregard constructed a scale model of the ship.
It was originally kept in his father's house in West Watrick,
Rhode Island, but since the mid 50's the location is a mystery.
Finally, in July
2001, plank owner Noel Ford from Mesa, Arizona, said he had a 4'
scale model and wanted to donate it. He was asked to send
us a picture and dimensions, but never did. Since then
there has been no word.
Anyone that might
know the location of any full scale model of the Newport News,
or additional information on any of the above mentioned models,
please notify Al Siegel..

Ship's
Store
New Products |
|
Your ship's store is
running smoothly under the direction of Susan Peden, and we are
constantly working on adding the new stuff you have been
requesting.
You
asked for them, so here they are....
CROW HATPINS
 |
We have obtained a small supply of
regulation insignia directly from an official supplier. -
These are packaged 2 to a card, with the eagle facing both
left and right ( according to your personal political
preference ). - Each pin has a double-pin clasp and will hang
on through the roughest weather. |
| With a
little Brasso and an old sock, one can remove some or all of
the subdued (black) metal paint, revealing a nice
brass-looking patina and considerable detail on the pins.
Those desiring a brighter, "solid
brass" look, just have to work a little longer with the
Brasso.
|
 |
The price will
be $5.00 per
package of 2
your
choice of PO1, PO2, or PO3 rates
NOTE: There is no
shipping charge on pins
if they are included in a "regular" shipping order.

Events and Items of Interest.
|
From Don Shirey
USS Salem Work Party Coordinator
Are you sad you missed the March
7th USS Newport News Work Party? Well, good news, the USS
Salem is going to have it's Simi Annual work party May 16-27
and then we will have another work party for anyone who wants
to join us in mid August. Dates not firm pending ship's
schedule.
We live on board and work the
standard POD 0800 to 1700. We eat breakfast and supper
ashore and snack at noon to save time. You will need
dungarees or other working attire, plus bedding (we sleep in
sickbay and JO Bunk rooms amid ship.) and toilet articles. Mid
ship showers work as does Wardroom head.
The May work party will have OS &
N Divisions working on superstructure 03-05 levels, DK, FT's &
BM working on Fwd Air Def Station, the Fire control Tower and
directors Sky 1 and Spot 1.
URGENTLY needed is a
young, agile seaman to paint the tower and Spot 1 using a
Bosun's chair. GM's will either help in T2
restoration as a memorial to those killed in USS Newport News
T2 in 1972, or they will work on 3"/50 fantail mounts which
are in sorry shape and freshen up MT 32.
There is a great sense of deja vu,
walking into a plot or a console room, checking with the same
guys that worked there in the 1950's, picking up your tools
and opening up a computer or control panel to make it viewable
for visitors, almost like getting ready for a material
inspection.
