A Year-End Message from Jim Peden;
Chairman of the USS Newport News Reunion Association

To:     All Crew of the USS Newport News far and wide:

Subject:   New Years standing orders

All crew are henceforth ordered to enjoy a prosperous new year and to continue forward with increasing success in all tasks undertaken.

These orders will remain in effect until further notice.

We will post a summary of the Association's operations to date below:

Turnover Ceremony
Chairman Emeritus Master Chief Quartermaster Franklin D. (Rags) Ragland visited Chairman-Elect Gunnery Fire Control Technician 3rd Class James A. Peden, spending a week in Vermont conducting Advanced Reunion Warfare School.  Peden was sworn in as Commander of the Reunion Association, handed the ship's checkbook and inventory, and ordered to carry on smartly.

2003 Reunion Site:
The site committee of Jim and Susan Peden, Mike and Peg Lanier, and Museum Curator Al Siegel approved the Boston Quincy Marriott as the official host hotel for the 2003 reunion.  It is new, very, very nice, and capable of handling the rather large crowd we are expecting.  The folks there are wonderful and really looking forward to serving us.  We will be posting an update on our proposed activities to date on the web site in January. For more information on the 2003 reunion, keep an eye on the reunion web pages at
http://www.uss-newport-news.com/reunion/

Ship's Store
Susan Peden has taken command of the Ship's Store, with daughter Rachael Peden also fully trained in packaging.  Note we do not (yet) accept credit cards and we do not take phone orders as a result.  Order form can be printed out from the ship's store web page at
http://www.middlebury.net/dummystore/nnra_order1.htm

Lone Sailor Memorial :
The US Navy Memorial Foundation and the City of Norfolk have teamed up to make a new park across from the USS Wisconsin, where a statue of the "Lone Sailor" will be erected in memory of all Norfolk-based ships who suffered unexpected disasters.  A cast bronze plaque will represent all the ships participating.  Under the direction of Chairman Emeritus Rags Ragland, the Newport News was first to have our plaque designed and sent to the foundry for production, ahead of even the USS Forrestal or the USS Cole.  Note: donations are NOT needed for this project.  The foundry fee of $1600 has already been paid by the Association.  A Well Done to Master Chief Ragland, who commanded the entire enterprise. For more details on this project, visit http://www.uss-newport-news.com/memorial/lone_sailor_statue.htm

All in all, not a bad start.

The energy is high for our 2003 reunion aboard our sister ship, the USS Salem.  Start saving your pennies.  The south shore of Boston is some very pricey real estate, but your site committee has already negotiated a convention discount of better than 50% on our rooms, so we're going to be enjoying first class accommodations at south-shore Super 8 prices.

Happy New Year
That's an order.

Jim Peden, Chairman ( El Commandante )
USS Newport News Reunion Association

** Financial Status of Web Site **

Well, let's start off with the bad news. Our USS Newport News Web Site Checking Account has become empty. It's been a year since the last cry for financial help and it looks like it is again time to ask for donations to support the web site.

We make available to all shipmates, our income and expense information so that you can see where the money comes from and where it goes.

You can go to http://www.uss-newport-news.com/nn_help.htm to see

** Web Site's New Look **

We are currently changing the look of the USS NN web site. To see what the web site is going to look like when we are done, you can visit any of the below web pages that have already been converted to the new look

Ship's Store, Event's Page, The Links Page, The USS NN Museum Pages,

** Web Site is Growing! **

Our web site just keeps growing!! It is now almost 400 web pages of USS Newport News information!! AND GROWING

From Dec 1999 through the first half of 2001, our web site was allowed 80 meg of disk space for to hold all our web pages, all our pictures and web site features.

During most of this year (2001) we have been fighting disk space problems. Constantly going over out allowed amount and having to clean and remove items to keep within our Disk Allocation.

Finally, we grew to 120 meg of disk space and we had already cleaned up as much as we could and removed all the "unimportant" stuff. The USS NN Webmaster group had to decide to increase our disk space or start removing the Movie files, Sound files and possible even our Picture Page sections to solve the problem. The decision was made to go ahead and spend the extra $40.00 a month to bring out Disk Allocation amount up to the 120 Meg that the web site was at.

This was a hard decision because it brought our monthly web hosting cost up to $90.00 per month! If we can not round up enough donations to pay for this amount of disk space, we will need to remove the Movie files and Sound files from the web site to bring out disk space down to where we need to be.

Unfortunately, the 120 meg of disk space that we upgraded to only covers what we are already using and leaves no room for future growth. We will still need to remove some of the "less popular" movie and sound files to make room for growth of the web site, but this will let us keep the movie and sound files that are visited the most.

In Memory of all who served.
$8.00 each

USS NEWPORT NEWS VIETNAM MEMORIAL PIN

At long last, we can honor the Vietnam service of our ship and it's 3 Vietnam crews.  This one-inch diameter pin has VIETNAM, the ship's outline, and USS NEWPORT NEWS CA-148 in raised gold against a memorial black background.  The Vietnam Service ribbon sits above all with micro-thin gold separations between the colors on the bar.  This is a truly beautiful pin indeed, and one that all crewmembers may wear in memory of the ship, and all Vietnam Veterans in our crew can wear with personal pride as well. (We have only 240 in stock, and it is first come, first serve on this initial custom order.  We will re-order if demand is there.)

$4.00 each

USA Flag Hat Pin

We have a most intricately detailed US Flag pin to balance off your cap.  These are the best we've seen, with all 50 stars clearly visible.

Shipping: There is no shipping charge on hat pins if they are included in a "regular" order. If not ordered with other items, please remember there is a $5.00 Minim shipping charge on all orders.

USS Newport News Museum
and Memorial Foundation

A Message from Al Siegel;
USS Newport News Museum Curator

The Museum and Memorial Foundation is having a work party the weekend of March 8th on board the USS Salem.

The purpose of the working party will be to finalize the lay out of the museum area, prepare and install the display cards and complete the Vietnam era section, which will be on the aft bulkhead.  In addition, the guys will start work on cleaning up Turret 2, starting with the Turret and the 01 level.  This will include removal of extraneous items, repairs to electrical systems, clean up of any leaked hydraulic fluid, and repairs to ladders and hatches.

All hands are invited to participate.  It would be helpful to bring your own work clothes and equipment, including rags, gloves, flashlights etc.  There will also be plenty of time to tour the Salem and find your old work spaces.

In addition, there will be liberty call each evening after knock off ship's work, and the crew will visit the nearest watering hole to relive some of our Newport News adventures.

Volunteers can sleep aboard the Salem for no charge (bring your own bedding) or can stay at the local Marriott where we have obtained a great rate of $79 per night.  There is no food service on board the Salem, so you would have to bring your own snacks and remove your trash each day (no maid service either).

If you are interested in joining the work party, help us get ready for you by filling out the "USS NN Work Party" form located at
http://www.uss-newport-news.com/salem/workpartyform_museum.htm

Best regards.

Al Siegel;  ETR2;  67-70
